He spent a lot of time with her even going out of town to see her in the hospital and was there the day she died and kissed her goodbye.
I remember one time when she got to come home for a few days and was too sick to get out of bed and my rambunctious grandson spent several hours laying with her. She told him she was ready to die but was worried about her mother.
It still makes me cry and it has been 11 years but my grandchildren talk of her fondly and just remember the good times.
I think it has made both of them better people for going through that with her.
My son went to kindergarten one year. While there a little MR girl connected with him. He used to make sure she was safe, and one tired rainy afternoon, his teacher told me, during storytime she fell asleep with her head on his shoulder. He reached around and held her until she woke up, patting her arm. (he had a baby sister and knew what to do with younger sibs)
He tried to explain her to us once and the best he could come up with was the poetic statement: I think she is from a different country.
Ah, children aren’t they fabulous?
My son had an MR friend who couldn’t talk well he just thought he was tongue-tied.
Jesus that was heartbreaking. It was a wonderful thing your grandson did.
Well, he wasn’t always so good. One of my granddaughter’s favorite memories is a day when “Jack” was out of the hospital. She was sick and sad and had very little energy. My grandson and “Jack’s” little sister were being pests and my usually sweet granddaughter called her brother a butthead. “Jack” laughed so hard she cried and said she was going to call her little sister that too.
It was the last time she saw her laugh and even though my granddaughter was being naughty it still makes her smile when she talks about it.
It’s a beautiful story.
And if that’s the worst your grandson did, it sounds like a Norman Rockwell painting :)

I knew kids breaking windows and kicking in screen doors for fun by 10.
