Dodgers starter Zack Greinke opted out of his contract to become arguably the top free-agent pitcher on the market Wednesday.
Greinke, 32, figures to command a significant raise from the $23 million he made last year. He went 19-3 with a major-league leading 1.66 earned-run average and a 0.84 WHIP, making him a favorite for the National League Cy Young Award.

Rangers need bats, not pitching.
“Giants, Sabien, snatch him up!!!”
Lets go Giants!
Grab the Z man and sign him.
Who can afford him?
Our middle pen was weak. We can always use another 15-20 game winner.
What will frost me is if they trade Moreland (just like getting rid of Rios). He was under a one year deal. IMO trade Fielder, he sucks at 1B and we bought him to hit home runs which he did not do very well at and Moreland batted almost as good and plays first with the best of them. Plus Mitch’s wife is hot.
They need to get serious about getting Gallo some third base time for the day when Beltre is done.
I’d like to see the Rangers get Syndergaard. He is a Texas boy and after seeing the way Terry Collins gave away the series with poor managing I’d be looking to move.
Cubs are only 1 more Great starting pitcher away. But can they afford him?
With the heightened interest in this young Cubs core and a mammoth TV deal in the wings, the Cubs should be able to afford any one—or even two—of the prime free agents. Also, Price has a good history with Maddon.
Do you have any idea what the Rangers would have to give up to get Syndergaard?? They just don’t have the pieces that would cause the Mets to even consider a deal.
Hopefully Profar can finally get over his injuries.
I’m expecting about 3 years, $75-80 million.
They’ll get two really good ones.
They’re considered frontrunners.
The Dodgers can throw around whatever money they want. They’ve proven that.
But it might be a better investment to spread his salary around, to two or three pitchers. After Kershaw (and Greinke this past season), there is little depth to that rotation.
The Yankees aren’t playing in that group. They’re not giving up the draft picks. They’re more interested in the likes of Jeff Samardzija.
The Nationals have had interest in him previously, and they’re likely to lose Jordan Zimmermann.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Cubs go after Price and Zobrist. Joe Maddon’s guys.
Dittos.
If I were an owner I wouldnât offer a contract for longer than 3 years for a 32 year old pitcher.
Agreed. Yes he had a great season, will probably win the Cy Young Award. But he’s getting up there in years, in baseball age anyway. And the risk of injury is always there.
When I was younger, I thought all the ball players were so old. Nowadays, in my advanced age, it makes me laugh a bit, to think that a 35 year old athlete is an old man in his sport. Just an observation...................
As a Dodger fan, I suspect the Dodgers will extend his old three-years remaining contract to five (or six) years or so at a ~$3MM raise: say, 5 @ $26MM. Greinke’s not stupid (even though he has social-anxiety disorder, which sometimes gives that impression)—he knows he’s prospering and valued right where he is. And with Ryu coming back from surgery, and the new GM’s minor league pitchers far from ready, the Dodgers need Greinke to carry them until high-quality reinforcements arrive.
I’m not a big fan of Greinke. You have to be kind of arrogant to be a successful pitcher, I get that. But you don’t have to be an Arrogant Ass.
You’re missing the most important factor in Greinke’s decision concerning which team to sign with:
the players MUST have clean hands after using the restroom!
