Windows 10 Font Problem

I upgraded to Windows 10 on Monday morning. It went surprisingly well. I had a few issues but they seemed to require minor tweaking or downloading new versions of existing apps. Now I am down to some of the more intractable issues.

The current issue deals with different web pages replacing some characters with others. I got rid of most of the question marks in a diamond but not all of them. The following passage is from a FR thread and is meant for illustration only. I have turned the offending characters red.

You might think that it’s (should be the word 'italics') the fact that a majority of Muslims in ‘67 Israel spit on the Two-State Solution and that PLO boss Abbas rejected the Oslo Accords in a speech at the United Nations.

If anyone has found any interesting add-ons for Windows 10 I would like to hear about them as well.

I’ve been using winders 10 for a few weeks and haven’t had the problem till this morning.

It’s also happening on my windows phone so I don’t think its exclusive to Windows 10. This phone runs 8.1 I think.

I’m seeing the same thing on my old Windows XP machine too.

This is not a windows 10 problem, it has recently started happening to me too on W8.1.

I find it mostly when I copy text from a FR post containing either single or double quotes, then paste the text into a reply. The preview shows the â€�‹œ junk and can be fixed by directly editing the reply.

In other words, the problem I've encountered seems to lie in the copying and pasting of single or double quotes.

I am on windows 7 and have not upgraded.

Yesterday my FR threads came down shot full of diamonds with question marks inside The diamonds. The black diamonds were about the size of a font capital.

This seems to have gone away today, AND IS IN NO WAY RELATED TO WINDOWS 10. -TOM

It’s NOT Windows 10. Happens on my Android phone and tablet as well as an XP machine.

OK, now it is showing up in my signature block.

The accented characters appear correctly in my notepad file and in MS Word but not when posted on Free Republic.

I opened this thread in Chrome and saw the same text as I did using Firefox.

JimRob & JohnRob I have pinged you on the off chance that it is something to do with FR.

I had the same problem this morning posting an article that orignated in Turkish but was translated to English. It had some totally different characters in the text.

Opening & closing quotes, accent marks, text with accent features added. It took manual editing to fix them all. I started with find/replace.

Im using an andriod phone and I have been seeing these€£¥₩%~ caracters as well. Went to setting and checked the auto correct box and that fixed the problem

You’ll love the auto correct . . . especially when you know you are typing the right word but AC disagrees. There is a reason AC also stands for AntiChrist.

Started seeing the diamonds with question marks yesterday on Chromium, IE and Firefox with Win 7, Linux Mint Debian and Ubuntu.

Changed the character encoding to “Western” and it got rid of the diamonds but replaced them is misc ascii characters. Does seem to be an artifact of cut and paste.
