(CNN) —Former NBA star Lamar Odom was conscious and able to say "Hi" to estranged wife Khloe Kardashian, a source with knowledge of the situation said Friday.

When employees at a Nevada brothel found former NBA star Lamar Odom unresponsive on Tuesday, they told the 911 dispatchers that he had been using cocaine on Saturday.

For years, millions of viewers have followed Lamar Odom's every move -- from the two-time NBA champ's layups on the basketball court to his highly publicized romance with reality TV star Khloe Kardashian.

It was unclear whether Odom remained conscious or how long he was awake.

Odom is not in a coma and is using a mask to breathe, but has serious damage to his vital organs, Kris Jenner, the former NBA star's mother-in-law, told "Access Hollywood" on Friday.

Odom has been at a Las Vegas hospital since Tuesday, after being found unresponsive at a brothel.

4 organ systems were damaged; brain, heart, kidney, and lungs. He was on a ventilator, in a coma, coded several times, had stroke/strokes, and is on dialysis. The ventilator has been removed. They hope he is coming out of the coma. His heart is beginning to function better. The report said all this was a "tiny" improvement.

As a Christian, I pray for the condition of his eternal soul.
