Non-programmers probably won't get this.

Speaking of programming jokes, have any of y’all ever heard the expression ‘he did a BAL to the brain and got an 806’?

To explain: BAL is the assembler cmd for branch-and-link and an 806 error is ‘program not found’ yuk yuk

I've seen it before, too, but not as a tee shirt.

How about this one: ‘There are only 3 kinds of people in the world - people who understand math and people who don’t.’

What would a hexadecimal version of the joke be? Or octal?

For both hex and octal, it would be “2”, which wouldn’t convey the meaning.

Doesn’t work with Hex or Octal, as they both have a 2 in them so the saying would just be:

There are 2 types of people in this world, those that know binary and those that don’t.

So the joke is lost...

In the early days of computers, there was a proposal that the human race switch from using the decimal system to octal. The reasoning was that it takes computers less time and energy to convert between native binary and octal than between native binary and decimal. It you add up the savings for every computer in the world, for all time, the total savings would be astronomical; so the quicker we switched over, the better.

Of course, they didn't forsee that in only a couple of years, octal would be largely replaced by hexadecimal for displaying raw bits.

The hex (0x02) and octal (o002) are not nearly as clever!

Engineers and mathematicians understand it just fine.

As does the odd, occasional electronics technician (such as myself...)

The early Motorola chips (e.g., the 6800) used octal in their development work, but I forgot why they opted for that numbering system.
