Besides the point about the scale being vastly different between the two images, and the field of view therefore being much tinier in the closeup, there may also be the full moon effect’ going on there, with the bright light of Charon washing out any faint/average stars that may be in that tiny field of view.

I know him through local astronomy groups here in New York City, although it’s been years since I’ve seen and talked to him. He’s actually a pretty cool guy. Great sense of humor. Very few people in the sciences are religious. The Pluto thing doesn’t bother me too much, other than I grew up thinking of it as a planet.
