Researchers in the US have developed an implant to help a disabled brain encode memories, giving new hope to Alzheimer’s sufferers and wounded soldiers who cannot remember the recent past.

The prosthetic, developed at the University of Southern California and Wake Forest Baptist Medical Centre in a decade-long collaboration, includes a small array of electrodes implanted into the brain.

The key to the research is a computer algorithm that mimics the electrical signalling used by the brain to translate short-term into permanent memories.

This makes it possible to bypass a damaged or diseased region, even though there is no way of “reading” a memory — decoding its content or meaning from its electrical signal.

“It’s like being able to translate from Spanish to French without being able to understand either language,” said Ted Berger of USC, the project leader.

Rest assured with every new technology in the last 20 years there are Trojan Horses and back doors.

What could possibly go wrong here?

The whole article is bilge. These researchers don't have a clue what these signals mean. All they're doing is re-routing around non-functional nerve fibers.

I get so tired of all this idolatry to science. These people don't have a clue what the mind is.

Exactly. Biology is still stuck in Newtonian physics and Darwinian thought. The cutting edge of physics is exploring consciousness as the basis of the physical world. So, if they think they think the brain is where a person’s personality resides and that they can encode memories on a chip, they will not succeed. (Thankfully!)

I hear you, brother. Landing mobile laboratories on Mars should be credited to Phrenology, the Hubble Space Telescope to astrology, the cure for polio to burning ear candles, and the internet to the laying on of hands. It’s amazing how most people can’t see that.

Stow the sarcasm. 9/10th of what the media portrays as "science" isn't. I'm an engineer, and a former "rocket scientist". I've taken more courses in hard science-- physics, chemistry, materials science-- than 9/10ths of Americans, and I know what science is.

These people are groping in the dark.

And it doesn't matter if something is good, it can still be made an idol. The sun and moon have been, for example.

I'm sure you'll belittle my faith, but I will say it anyway: worshiping created things rather than the Creator is why this country is going into the toilet. Bill Nye and Neil deGaseous Tyson are science idolaters.
