Underestimate me all you want... we had a little ol gal from North Chicago as an intern this summer...what a priv
ledged pretty white girl...as naive as could be..college grad (same as me)but she made sure to tell all of us hicks how misinformed and simple minded we were...us being southerners...we excused her IGNORANCE and treated her quite well...it was a laugh....global warming, diversity...you name it...she bought into it....sad in a way for most of us.....many people are truly sheeple....no matter their education level.....smartest guy in my life ever knew was a guy from East Texas...Joe Bob Bradley...had a photographic memory....talked like Ernest T. Bass....I learned to not underestimate him.
Don't automatically assume that they're saying that some other accent isn't a problem and attack people with that accent.
It's the same with any strong regional accent.
The good news is that such things are never an absolute bar to success if you have talent and are willing to work.
As a northerner, I moved to the northwest corner of North Carolina this year and interact with mountain folks every day. I find the culture fascinating. It always amazes me to see northerners (especially northeasterners) look down their nose at the southern dialect. The southern form of English is one of the oldest forms of English in North America. It’s older than many of the northern accents.
Of course, I guess it’s easier to just think folks are beneath them...
Appallingly, a few years ago, in a race for Virginia’s governor, the native candidate was horribly mocked for his SW Virginia accent .. by supporters of the Ohio native (who won! and now sits in the U.S. Senate).
