Atari games buried more than 30 years ago in New Mexico landfill

A cache of Atari game cartridges dug up in a New Mexico landfill last year has generated more than $100,000 in sales over the last several months.

The April 2014 dig ended speculation surrounding an urban legend and proved it to be true that Atari discarded hundreds of games, including E.T. The Extraterrestrial, more than 30 years ago.

In addition to the E.T. cartridges, Joseph Lewandowski found more than 60 other titles including Asteroids, Missile Command, Warlords, Star Raiders, Swordquest, Centipede and Super Breakout.

The machine to have from that era was the Vectrex...Gave a very good emulation of what was available at the arcade.

Not even nostalgia can evoke a shred of enjoyment out of that bizarre ET game.

It truly was one of the worst games ever created. I think I beat it once, but I really couldn't tell for sure.

If you get a chance to see the documentary it is well recommended. A fun ride and thorough take on the rise and fall of Atari.

Dig the cartridge out of the landfill, blow on it and reinsert.

What? No Space Invaders?

Man, I remember when that came out. It was the game to have.

I think it was somewhere around $30 to $40 retail, which was a lot of money in those days. My folks got the system and a few games for Christmas (family gift), and then when Space Invaders came out, whoo boy! I also loved Pitfall. They had a contest when Pitfall came out that if you could get 20,000 point you could send in a picture of the score and get a Pitfall Harry Explorer Club Patch. I beat it, took a picture of it, sent in my entry, but never heard back from anyone.

Oh well.

I know where a couple of buried landfills are; they were closed in the late 60s.

I’ve always wondered how many baseball collections are interred there.

Kiddo put his foot through the console so that was the end of our Atari. Couldn’t buy a new one that late in the game and couldn’t give it away. Finally threw all the games out. It was a sad day.

Rusty Griswold: Hey, ya’ got Pac Man?
Cousin Dale: No.
Rusty Griswold: Ya’ got Space Invaders?
Cousin Dale: Nope.
Rusty Griswold: Ya’ got Asteroids?
Cousin Dale: Naw, but my dad does. Can’t even sit on the toilet some days.
