"Supergiant" Natural gas discovery could be largest ever

In what could be the largest natural gas discovery in history, Italian energy company Eni says it has unearthed a "supergiant" gas field in the Mediterranean Sea covering about 40 square miles.

The gas field could hold a potential of 30 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Eni says that's the energy equivalent of about 5.5 billion barrels of oil. The company won't know the field's true size until it begins to develop it.

Found in the deep waters off the northern coast of Egypt, Eni claims the gas field to be the largest ever in the Mediterranean and possibly the world. After Eni explores and begins to develop the field, the company estimates that it will be able to satisfy Egypt's natural gas demand for "decades."

In many ways, natural gas will become more important than crude oil because unlike crude oil, natural gas is far easier to refine and highly desirable because it burns vastly cleaner than coal. Why do you think China signed that US$400 billion deal with Russia to import natural gas? Expect natural-gas fired power plants all over the world in the immediate future until improved solar technology and a new class of very safe nuclear reactors come online over the next 25 years.

Seems to be a lot in that part of the Mediterranean, Israel is developing 3 rich offshore fields not far from there.

Supergiant?

Sounds simply like Eni is trying to pump up its stock price and managers salaries.

Since there is no oxygen there, nothing.

Wait...wait...So they found it but “The company won’t know the field’s true size until it begins to develop it.”

What about the decade of environmental studies? They can’t just jump straight to development! Has anyone considered the plight of the indigenous wildlife? What about the impact all of this gas will have on the atmosphere? /lib

Quick! Declare it a national monument off limits to energy exploration!

That would be great news for Egypt. They needed a break to help them reform. Egyptian cotton only goes so far and their tourism has tanked.

Yeah, there are many far larger gas deposits in the world.

The late 20th century was filled with the mad rush for energy independence and control.

The early 21st century will be filled with energy abundance and independence worldwide.

None of this would have happened without the oil & gas industry continuously investing in itself, its exploration capabilities and its extraction capabilities.

Remember, if liberals had their way, the industry would have been nationalized and still rooted in 1950s technology.

None of this abundance of energy would have been found under government control.

Only the free market delivers this.

Solar & wind are soooooo dead!!!

No.

We can burn flares at night so solar can be 24 hours, and use nat gas powered fans to supplement the wind during calms.

See. Green energy is still the solution.
