Environmentalist George Monbiot has sparked debate by skinning, butchering, cooking and eating a squirrel on live TV.

The Guardian columnist attracted criticism after revealing that he had eaten a roadkill squirrel, and later wrote a 2,360-word piece in the newspaper justifying his actions.

"There are millions of squirrels, rabbits, pigeons, deer that are killed every year, and a lot of them are landfilled," Monbiot said on the BBC's Newsnight as he butchered a squirrel bought from a farm shop.

"It doesn't have to be. It's not very nice! But meat production isn't. But at least there's no further ethical problem here."

He continued: "I'm just cutting through the tail vertebrae - the tail bone in other words - but not the skin. It's quite a delicate operation, that. A super-sharp knife, by the way.

"The cutting along a little bit each leg. This is a rather fat old squirrel - a lot of meat on it, but the older they are the tougher they get, so they do have to be marinated."

It's not the first time Monbiot has controversially grabbed the headlines, having had to make a £25,000 charity settlement with the late Lord McAlpine after wrongly implicating him in the North Wales child sex abuse scandal.

Monbiot issued a full and unreserved apology over a tweet sent to his 56,000 followers, which said: "I looked up Lord #McAlpine on t'internet. It says the strangest things.

I have not watched the video, but I wonder what the FDA would say about this?

See, this is what liberals think: It’s a dead squirrel, it deserves respect, sympathy, and a full funeral with rights. Just like any other human being.

Good for him!

It will be entertaining to watch the PETA fools freak out over this.

P.S. squirrels are a PITA to skin, tough to cook tender, and there’s not much meat on ‘em. Bunnies are better!

Oh... touchy feely types. I see.

.22 rifle
Half dozen squirrels

Squirrel dumplings for supper.

Liberals are funny. This is commonplace where I’m from.

Q: How many Guardian reporters does it take to eat a squirrel?

A: Two. One to eat the squirrel and one to direct traffic.

PETA members who are offended by the slaughter of a squirrel, and who enjoy eating steak, and I’m sure there are many, should visit a slaughterhouse where beef is produced.

I don’t see the problem with this. I hunt squirrels every September and cook ‘em up in chili or stew.

Squirrel sucks.
Had 'em twice, would rather eat goat. Boiled.

You might be surprised. Lots of PETA members are scrawny vegans suffering from what I would consider “eating disorder”.

As the cattleman’s bumper sticker says, “Seven days without beef makes one weak.”

It’s an ingredient in Brunswick Stew, isn’t it? I thought there was a part of it that had to be removed before cooking but maybe that was skunk. Only the Brits could be upset that a poor widdle dead squirrel was consumed by a person.

Are you on our weekly cooking thread? I’d love to read your recipe for squirrel stew.

Probably. I bet there are tasty squirrel dishes, but I have yet to try one.

>> I thought there was a part of it that had to be removed before cooking but maybe that was skunk.

LOL. Skunk, definitely. Carefully. Preferably a job for someone else. Squirrel? I’d have to go back and look up the cleaning instructions I googled up while my first (and last) table squirrel was waiting lifeless at the bottom of my pecan tree. :-)

What an amateur. Make a small slit across the backbone, stick in two fingers from each hand and pull his pajamas off. Feed the spaghetti to the squirrel dog and start the fryer heating.

Well, the first thing you need is about 8 - 10 squirrels, depending on their size.

We’re originally from Louisiana so we are, indeed, quite liberal with seasonings and hot sauces. We also use small red potatoes.

A very basic description of our squirrel stew is a cross between a gumbo and a stew, but for our squirrel stew we don’t make a full roux.
