The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" may be regularly ranked among the greatest albums of all time, but it's nowhere near the top of Keith Richards' list.
In an interview with Esquire, the Rolling Stones guitarist dismissed the 1967 classic as "a mishmash of rubbish."
"There's not a lot of roots in that music. I think they got carried away. Why not? If you're the Beatles in the '60s, you just get carried away -- you forget what it is you wanted to do," he told Esquire's Scott Raab. "You're starting to do 'Sgt. Pepper.'
"Some people think it's a genius album, but I think it's a mishmash of rubbish, kind of like '(Their) Satanic Majesties,' " he said, referring to the Stones' late 1967 album that attempted to out-"Sgt. Pepper" the Beatles, right down to its 3-D Michael Cooper cover.
At some point, the Beatles may have agreed -- perhaps not with the "rubbish" description, but that they'd gotten carried away.

Do you have to bring him up on every thread? I have no idea, nor do I care, what kind of music Trump likes. But with his love of bragging and boasting and multiple baby mamas, I suspect it’s rap.
it’s one of my favorite albums of all time!
He’s just bitter that so many people, including young people, are aware of Sgt Pepper’s. The young, however, most likely couldn’t name a single Stone’s album.
Easy Nick, easy ... I was just pokin’ some fun at ya here.
(although to be accused of ‘bringing up Trump on every thread’ strikes me as a bit ingenuous, considering you usuall invade every TRUMP thread that comes up to castigate and condemn that guy who is now exceeding 40 percent in the polls, you know?)
Have a nice night anyway Nick.
Reading about them punching the clock in the studio trying to come up with something sounds like torture, musically. It's a wonder they came up with as much as they did ‘67-'69.
Mick/Keef are way underrated as songwriters. Did you catch DOOM & GLOOM a couple of years ago? A classic!
What’s this I hear Mick Taylor is re-joining the Stones tour this summer?????
How did they understand him?
How did they understand him?
Lyrically it was nonsense, along with a lot of their material. But it’s great melodically. The Beatles were genius’ at that.
I was a huge Beatles fan in the 60s and 70s. I used to hear a lot of people say "Stones are better" because they were a "harder rocking" band. That may be true if one only judges music by the hardness of its rocks.
But The Beatles (Lennon & McCartney at least) were among the best songwriters of their time. If one looks at the music of that era from the over-all category of "pop" as opposed to the more specific category of "rock", I think The Beatles have a more lasting impact. For one thing, many Beatles songs could be covered well by other artists, or even made into good orchestral arrangements. The Stones' songs IMO only sound right when the Stones (Mick) do them.
I seldom listen to either of them anymore. Now that I'm an old fart pushing 60, I mainly listen to Classical or Sinatra. Rock music IMO is music by and for young people. It no longer speaks to me, and I don't care to see 60 or 70-somethings on stage showing they "can still rock".
I still like “2000 Light Years From Home.” But man, talk about embarrassing cover art.
Hard to disagree.
I read some Brit poll a few years ago that stated the same thing.
I talked my mom into buying it for me when I was in the second grade (1968). I wore the grooves off of it. Now, all these years later, it resides on my iPod. It has that much staying power. It's just that good.
Yep. The Stones have really one iconic song, “Sympathy for the Devil.” The Beatles have an iconic CATALOGUE.
Agreed!
Sorry Keith, Pepper was a game-changer.
And your pal Mick reminisced in recent years that the Stones tunes were no good. Nope, they were awesome.
Keith, play us some kick-ass guitar that only you know how to do and avoid the brain fog of rock history.
Then consider me a heretic too. I've always thought the Beatles stunk.
