Screw salads: They're not helping you and may be hurting the planet
National Post ^ | August 25, 2015 | Tamar Haspel, Washington Post

As the world population grows, we have a pressing need to eat better and farm better, and those of us trying to figure out how to do those things have pointed at lots of different foods as problematic. Almonds, for their water use. Corn, for the monoculture. Beef, for its greenhouse gases. In each of those cases, there’s some truth in the finger-pointing, but none of them is a clear-cut villain.

There’s one food, though, that has almost nothing going for it. It occupies precious crop acreage, requires fossil fuels to be shipped, refrigerated, around the world, and adds nothing but crunch to the plate.

It’s salad, and here are three main reasons why we need to rethink it.

Salad vegetables are pitifully low in nutrition. The biggest thing wrong with salads is lettuce, and the biggest thing wrong with lettuce is that it’s a leafy-green waste of resources.

In July, when I wrote a piece defending corn on the calories-per-acre metric, a number of people wrote to tell me I was ignoring nutrition. Which I was. Not because nutrition isn’t important, but because we get all the nutrition we need in a fraction of our recommended daily calories, and filling in the rest of the day’s food is a job for crops like corn. But if you think nutrition is the most important metric, don’t direct your ire at corn. Turn instead to lettuce.

We live in America. We can eat better than Kings in other countries. I don’t need the media to tell me what to eat.

Ha! I have long maintained that green leafy things are what food eats.

Used to be, making salad for myself at home, I’d toss in all kinds of stuff. A few years ago I figured lettuce was awful. Lately, for a salad, I just put five or six stuffed olives, dump on shredded cheese, and coat with ranch dressing. That’s all.

Absolutely true.

I may disagree with someone's favorite food fetish, but they don't need the media telling them what to eat. Or me, or anyone else.

The author must be thinking about iceberg lettuce, which is indeed empty of nutrients and is mostly watery filler.

Romaine lettuce, on the other hand, is more nutritious than many other vegetables.

Not gardening at all this year.

I am a big believer in folks choosing the food they eat, whether I agree with it or not.

The only thing that really gripes me is the jerks that are 'sure they know' because of something they read on the internet.

The old caveat of 'don't believe everything you read' applies even more during the internet era.

So it's safer not to preach food fetishes to me. ;)

Unless, of course, you’re eating salads as a way of cutting calories. Plants in general have lower nutrition density than meat. There’s a reason most herbivores have to eat all day long in order to get enough nutrition to survive.

Dolts like Tamar (author) won’t be happy unless the Proles are reduced to eating synthetic soy-based loaf 3 meals a day (naturally, he assumes he will be one of the Beautiful People who will of course be permitted to continue eating fine foods because they’re so much more deserving than those awful redneck square-meal conservatives).

Restaurants’ biggest profit maker is not on the wine list, but in the salad ingredients.

That said, we do need a certain amount of fiber and/or roughage in our diet, JMHO. I’ve gone on Atkins many times & it helps to shovel in some `rabbit food’ daily.

This “report”, however, is nothing but more U.N. inspired globaloney about how we selfish Americans consume most of the world’s food supply, resources, gasoline, Pokemons, etc.

Green leafy things love CO2, that dangerous “pollutant” that will surely kill us all. It really will.

Whenever I ran a commercial kitchen, the money-maker was breakfast foods. I tended to avoid the late-night salad crowd and just hit the salad station when I needed the roughage.

But I'm the only one that knows whether I need that or not. No-one, especially some blogger on the internet has a clue what my body needs.

We should be planting more farms not less. Global Warming after all.

When I go through the salad bar, I don’t like to even watch what a lot of folks do. I watched one guy put a little token lettuce down. Then he upended the crouton bowl and buried the lettuce. Then he drowned the croutons with ranch dressing. That was his “salad”.
