Slain gun instructor's family wants law to ban children from automatic weapons

One year ago today, Charles Vacca's children received the horrific news: Their father, a shooting instructor, was accidentally killed by a 9-year-old girl with an Uzi submachine gun.

Vacca's children have publicly forgiven the girl. But now, they've launched an online petition pushing for legislation to prevent children from shooting fully automatic weapons.

A video on the petition's website features Vacca's four children, starting with his 12-year-old son, Christopher.

"It's legal for kids my age and younger to shoot Uzis," he said. "That hasn't changed."

Vacca's 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, offered a startling comparison: "Laws say that children can't drink, can't drive, can't vote. But they can shoot fully automatic assault weapons. That hasn't changed."

In Abe Lincoln’s day, the stupid did not live long. Now, we take care of them and they are outbreeding the smart.

Translation. We liked the publicity and this is a way for us to extend our 15 minutes of fame.

Yes, and check the instructor for stupid.

I thought only I did that. One round at first. Solid rule

I’m okay with that. I don’t think we should give children to automatic weapons, they are not equipped to care for children.

THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS.

Here are 5 plastic gas cans that are GUARANTEED to get fuel EVERYWHERE it is not supposed to go.... with their "safe" spouts, all because some asshole poured gasoline on an open fire from an old style can.

Luckily, the threads are the same between the 5 gallon containers these days and an older one I have. I discard the “safety” spouts and keep the caps. I use the one flexible type spout from my old one one the newer ones. Works like a charm.

I don’t see this family as trying to cynically exploit their loved one’s death for attention. I think they want to pass a law so his death will “have meaning”.

Passing a dumb law is not the way to give meaning to his death, though. Educating people about safe gun handling practices could actually save lives, and in that respect his death probably has saved lives as it educated some and reminded others about the importance of range safety.

I even do that when I let someone fire a 1911 for the first time. One round in the mag. Rack the slide. Fire. Then I decide whether to give them a full mag.

You can still buy “racing jugs” that will quickly pour gas into the gas tanks where it belongs. They are a loophole in the “safe gas can” law. Amazon sells them.

Not a license. There is no license. It’s a tax, just like alcohol and tobacco are taxed. Ergo “ATF.” BATF mails you a stamp as proof the tax has been paid, and the stamp (affixed to an 8.5x11 sheet of paper) must remain with the weapon. The tax is $200 and was imposed during The Great Depression. At the time, $200 was presumed to be so exorbitant, it would stifle sales of NFA weapons. However, it’s never yet been raised.

Ok...not a license per se, but its more than just a tax. You still have to get the local chief LEO and the ATF to approve it. Its not automatic, and I doubt one for a 9 year old would be approved....which was my point.

The law should not get involved. None of my kids fired fully automatic until they were adults because I decided they shouldn’t. That instructor made a bad decision with a little girl (and the parents did too), and he died for it, but it was his place (and the parents) to decide.

Those aren’t gas cans, but they sure look like that. No, those are devices designed by demons which one should avoid at all costs.

Personally I wouldn’t hand an automatic weapon to a 9 year old...but I’m very skeptical of any gun control laws. This incident was a rare fluke - not the norm.

Everyone knows you shouldn’t turn a nine-year-old (or several) loose with a submachine gun. Let alone several nine-year-olds.

Here’s one good, clean, wholesome alternative that’s fun for the whole family!

You’d probably be better off putting the 9yo at the controls of a tripod-mounted M2 BMG ...

Almost. Look dad, I got a Jap!

Kid’s having a blast (even if he doesn’t get to shoot the thing).

The magazine disconnect was invented by a CA politician who’s child was killed by of the guns which h3 had not secured. Because of his incompetence, we are all suffering.
