Vanity - WD Passport drive not compatible with Windows 10

Posted on 08/23/2015 7:17:44 PM PDT by Perdogg

I had to go back to W8.1 tonight because my passport drive was not compatible with W10.

Unless I am doing something wrong. I check the WD website and it said it was not compatible. Has anyone else experienced this?

I have a PP external HDD but I don’t run Windows 10. Thanks for the warning.

you should consider moving to a NAS setup (network addressable storage). if you setup a gigabit internal network, the speeds for your long storage is quite good.

as a bonus, you get mirrored backup and access from multiple systems.

I have a WD Ultra 2tb USB 3.0 mini-drive that I originally got when I had 8.1.

My approach to all of these things is to immediately format them to get rid of any bloat-ware or other junk taking up space.

I have recently done the upgrade to Win 10 and my drive reads perfectly. It is just another USB drive. I just now copied several MB of files to it to make sure and then deleted them. All good.

Copy the data off, format NTFS with win 10, replace the data and live happily ever after (with more space on your drive).

If there are just certain files you need to get from the drive, you might consider temporarily booting your system with a Linux live USB stick. (I use a PP with Linux...multiple distros...no problems)

You could copy the files or the directories to your NTFS hard drive on your computer and then use them that way.

Since you have already gone back to 8.x, do the copy/format/copy there. You do not need to do it in Win 10.

What specific question do you have?

Yes I heard that on the Amazon forums a couple weeks ago. I also heard WD is working on a driver, but who knows?

you are saying I should copy everything from my passport, format it in windows 8.1, copy back, then switch to 10?

The hardware should work. It’s probably the WD “SmartWare” that is not compatible with W10.

This is the first I have heard of any USB drives being incompatible with Win-10.

One thing I might mention - Just because Windows loaded a driver for a device (in this case a USB driver) it doesn’t mean that it is what the manufacturer prefers you to use. You may find a Windows-10 driver at your computer manufacturer website that more effectively controls the hardware.

...just a thought.

I scanned for reported solutions and one person reports the win 10 issue was only seen when using the WD Passport on a USB 2 port, but worked OK when used on a USB 3 port. You might check that out.

How full is the drive?

if plenty of space, you could partition the drive and move your important files to the new partition

I burned an ISO disk of Windows 8 and then did a clean install, just keep hitting the ‘skip’ or ‘not now’ buttons during validation and it will self validate later.

Since installing Windows 10, I’ve been trying to install Linux_mint 17.02, Trouble is, it will not discover the network, despite being hard wired and known working equipment.

And UEFT kinda sucks for people that like to tinker.
