Well, idevices meant iPhone/iPad. But that’s okay if you don’t have them. Still, the upgrade is worth it.
I've been running Yosemite on my Mac Mini for a while now after upgrading from Mavericks. All my old applications work fine, and I've experienced no problems. iWork works fine.
However, as you say the Photo app is weird, having rearranged my pics from my large iPhoto app and doesn't have some of the great features of iPhoto. I do use the Photo app. But I kept the old iPhoto app, and when you open it there is a reminder that changes won't be reflected in the new Photo app; but both can co-exist. Just be sure you have backups on an external drive that is kept safe.
I might try to reinstall Work.
Did you have an option to keep iPhoto instead of installing Photo.?
I'm trying to remember if there was an option. After upgrading to Yosemite, when I opened Photo it automatically converted my iPhoto gallery. But it did not remove the old iPhoto. However, my setup is not typical. I have several iPhoto libraries on an externally attached hard drive. The settings point to the library in use. This way I can segment my photo collection by type, for instance one dealing with family on one side versus another, or of my car hobby or other collections. Plus it's easier to handle when each library is nearly 100GB each.
I haven't done much with the new Photo app, it seems rather limiting. For instance, just a single library. I don't know enough about it and need to study it further. It seems that Preferences won't allow me to switch to a different library other than the default on my internal hard drive. From what I read, it does allow you to keep items in their original locations when you import, called referenced files. But I'd rather be able to reference whole library collections than single pics. I will have to experiment further.
Found it. To switch libraries in the new Photo app under Yosemite, you press the Option key while opening Photo. Then it allows you to select different picture libraries, including old iPhoto libraries (which are then converted). I recommend using Finder to create a duplicate of your iPhoto library, then press ‘option’ when opening Photo and point to the duplicate library you created - safer that way. When done converting, Photo will notify you that iCloud photo sharing is only available in the System Photo Library (the default in your internal hard drive). It creates a new converted library in addition to the old one, which is good to know as you can still use the old one under iPhoto.

Forgot to make this clear, that iPhoto is kept by default when you use Photo. Use Launchpad or open old iPhoto from the Finder Applications window.
