$50K vintage Jaguar burned in Cajon Pass fire delivered to upbeat buyer

Malcolm Croxton couldn’t wait to get his hands on the 1962 E-Type Jaguar he had purchased for $50,000 from someone in Oklahoma.

On Tuesday, the vintage Jag was finally delivered, albeit not in the condition the car restoration hobbyist from Torrance had bargained for.

The Jaguar was badly charred in a fast-moving wildfire as a rig transported it on I-15 to the South Bay. The car was one of several dozen vehicles abandoned on the congested freeway as the North Fire approached, forcing the occupants to flee in a scene captured on live TV.

Still, Croxton was surprisingly upbeat when he finally laid his eyes on the classic car.

“It’s still restorable,” he said. “There’s some trauma and damage, but nothing that can’t be fixed. In a way I haven’t seen anything yet that has really disappointed me. I’m a bit positive about it. There’s nothing on it that’s broken, damaged or melted that can’t be repaired or replaced or made as good as new.”

The XKE was the first car I fell in love with...followed quickly by Lotus.

I never cared for 'vettes although the split-window was almost passable.

1969...pure classic lines that STILL look great!

I think insurance is the reason for being up beat

If he was planing anyway to do a full restore..then the fire really had little impact on that cost.. but now get money from insurance

Be like planning to do a full tear down remodel of a house..the have the same house burn down before you start and it was insured...it a win win

Well at least he follows the always sound strategy of having two jaguars, one to drive while the other is in the shop getting fixed.

I restored my first bike, a ‘72 Kawasaki triple 350, as I sanded down the tank I noted it must have been resprayed a dozen or more times, from the original orange. Hilarious! It ended up 68-69 Ford’s Candyapple Red. My fave...

This one would be a challenge. It’s also one of my best accidental discoveries that I make a few bucks on even after all these years. Good horn relay in action.

With the number of car restoration shows on cable TV, this CAR could be a STAR in the near future. Great backstory and something very close to being a complete rebuild!

PS: I don’t think that I’d trust the rubber!

I got my XKE in 76 and it was ok with it unless I was driving in Manhattan. City traffic put the porker in the shop more than I was blowing out the exhaust on the Ll.E at 3am slocking to Montauk. She, along with wifey#1 were gone before the 5th tune up

“Croxton looked over the burned out Jag and said; “Well, at least the electricals are no worse.” “

Heck, if you’ve got a valid VIN and the title to it, you can replace everything else.
