Poll: Americans' view of labor unions improving
Politico ^ | 8-17-2015 | NICK GASS

Nearly six in 10 Americans have a favorable view of labor unions, according to the results of a new Gallup survey released Monday.

Approval of unions jumped to 58 percent this year, an increase of five percentage points from 2014, though still well below the 75 percent organized labor enjoyed in the early 1950s but greater than the 48 percent who approved in 2009 in the grips of the recession.

Overall, 37 percent of Americans said they wanted unions to have more influence on the political process, while 35 percent wanted less influence and 24 percent wanted more of the same. The percentage of Americans saying they want more union influence on politics has slightly risen since 2009, with a similar share among Americans wanting less labor influence declining.

Regardless, the share of Americans wanting unions to maintain the same level of influence has mostly declined since the turn of the millennium.

Breaking down the results by gender, a greater share of women than men expressed approval of unions and also said they wanted them to have more influence (63 percent to 52 percent approval; 41 percent to 33 percent on influence). Young adults, aged 18 to 34, had more positive opinions about labor unions as well. On a regional basis, the South is the only area of the country where a majority of respondents said they did not approve of labor unions.

Nearly eight in ten Democrats (79 percent) approve of unions, compared to 52 percent of independents and 42 percent of Republicans.

The latest results come as Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders fight to win the endorsements of prominent unions.

In light of the H-1B visa (scandalous) program I think STEM workers might need a union.

We ignore facts, even the bad ones, at our own peril.

Ignoring facts helped get ODimwit elected twice.

I know a lot of people are looking around at the post-union private sector economy and have decided things were batter when unions were bigger and more powerful.

This is part of the larger shift towards populism.

I don’t like Unions....for many reasons, but one of them is they give the dues to THEIR people in donation form for who THEY want to vote for....(clintons, bushes, obumas).....

It appears the only way to stop gloBULLism from destroying manufacturing is a strong force to speak up for US labor. Unionism is going to make a come back due to the greed of corporatist gloBULLism.

Most employers treat people like craps these days. Most HR departments don’t even pick up an internal call. They have the ringers turned off. They recruit people they never even meet with key word search internet chases.

It is bad. It is needlessly costly. This merely reflects it.

I’m not surprised. The unions got out of control because they bought politicians. Now, there’s a real need to re-establish the middle class with US jobs for US citizens, at reasonable enough wages to live a self-sufficient life.

Opinions are like a$$es. Look up union membership statistics and you’ll see year over year declines.

Illegals, just love their la or unions, especially the SEIU, AFL-CIO, teamsters, and the contractors through the trade unions.

The unions get dirt cheap labor, just like the companies they contract with, and get a reliable supply of social-democrat voters to further their cause.

And contrary popular belief here on FR, the majority of hispanics, legal or otherwise, are hard-core leftists, and think Bernie Sanders isn't socialist enough for them. Oh, and most of the hispanics here on the west coast are card carrying la raza/reconquista types, and use the unions to infiltrate companies solely to shut out the “native” population (ie: gringos).

As you saw in Portland, OR. the hispanic and white guilt liberal illegal employer types were falling all over themselves to endorse Sanders.

This needs to be repeated over and over. It cannot be typed or spoken enough.

Politico ought to get the charade over with and hoist a flag of Joseph Goebbels over the corporate office.
