Been living in the Bay Area (San Jose) since 1967 and have never seen one of these beetles until the last week or so. The pic is deceiving but this thing is pretty good sized. Sounds like a mini 747 when it flies. Also, has a bad ass shiny green color almost looks like it was green anodized.

We just call them click beetles cause of the sound they make. But I think it is properly called a brown beetle. There is a species known as the click beetle but they have longer bodies.

The shiny green color makes it sound like a Japanese beetle. Are your roses and/or battleships safe?

Japanese beetle, its larva is in your grass as grubs that eat the roots of your grass. Treat the lawn with an insecticide in early June and early July. Treat ground cover, too, such as wood chips (you'll find the grubs under there, too).
The beetle attacks luscious leaves and the result is a lattice work of the leaves, particular in stone-fruit trees (cherry, peach).
