D-Day Veterans Still Waiting for Medals Promised by France Last Year

D-DAY veterans promised France's highest bravery honour are still waiting for their medals due to red tape.

The French announced last year on the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings that surviving UK veterans would get the Legion d'Honneur.

But fewer than 250 of the 2,800 who applied via the Ministry of Defence have received their awards.

The medal can not be awarded posthumously, meaning the families of those who die waiting will not get them.

The delay has been blamed on bureaucracy.

An MoD spokesman said: "We are fast-tracking the process where we are aware of health issues such as terminal illness and we hope that the bulk of cases will be cleared by the end of the year."

I see the award for the whole unit, not necessarily me Ivor Turner, a former Royal Marine Former Royal Marine Ivor Turner, 91, lost 22 comrades fighting the 12SS Panzerdivision Hitler Jugend, and applied for this medal 14 months ago.

The great-grandfather said: "I got a letter from the MoD last year apologising for the delay and saying they had passed the application to the French government but I haven't heard anything since.

"I've heard rumours they are going to start sending them by post - I hope they do."

It is quite obvious France is too busy trying to eradicate islamaphobia and advance socialism, you expect them to waste one iota of effort recognizing the brave men who saved them from their previous expressions of cowardice?

When France gets in trouble she cries for help. When the help is no longer needed it’s allez enfer.

If WWII GIs knew in 1941 what American and France would turn into 65 years later...

They would have refused to fight.
