Dear Apple: Please be nice to Microsoft
Business Insider ^ | 08/02/2015 | MATT WEINBERGER

It's been a few days since Microsoft Windows 10 launched and so far I'm loving it — and that's coming from someone who's been using a Macbook for the last 10 years.

There's just one thing missing. Well, two, technically.

I really miss my Apple and Google apps.

There are lots of perks to buying into the Apple ecosystem. With a Mac and an iPhone, you get all kinds of computing superpowers.

There's Handoff, an Apple feature which lets you shunt websites and draft emails from the phone to the desktop. There's Apple's Airdrop, which lets you send files (mostly photos) wirelessly between iPhone and the Mac. There's Continuum, which lets you receive phone calls on the computer or iPad.

But for my money, the best and most useful thing on the Mac is the Messages app, which lets you read and reply to text messages straight from the desktop. Originally, it would only work for Apple's own iMessage standard, but it was broadened earlier this year to include all text messages.

It's absurdly useful, especially while I'm trying to multitask at work.

On Windows, you lose all of that. There's likely no technical reason why Apple's couldn't make these features available on Windows, but Apple prefers to keep its best toys on its own side of the fence.

That makes a lot of business sense: Mac sales have defied the overall shrinkage of the PC market.

That's at least partially because Macs make an amazing complement to the always-popular iPhone — a smartphone that sells 47.5 million units during a bad quarter, and the cash cow that allows Apple to sit on a massive mountain of cash.

But Apple's no-Windows policy could also backfire if Windows 10 becomes a smash hit.

Last week, I mentioned that I recently converted to an Apple computer, after using MS based OS machines for 32 years, due to my irritation of having to fight malware and viruses.. I very simply mentioned that I wondered why that Apples seem to be more immune to it.

I joined the thread just as a matter of discussion, but didn't realize how bad an out and out war there is here between the iOS and WIN factions. It got ugly........ Including unsolicted nasty Freepmail.

“In other words, mad_as_he$$, it was NOT a company policy to employ underage workers. “
Now you are just making stuff up. Just like a cultist Prius owner. Show me where I said that on this thread.

Apple was capable of using Token Ring protocols as well. There were adaptors for those as well. However, they were not as common.

There weren't a lot of PC's or mainframes using it back then either, mostly due to facilities not being wired for it yet. 3270 terminals were replaced with PCs using 3270 coax adapters, so the existing SNA network and coax cabling could be used to connect them to the mainframe. As facilities were re-wired, token ring adapters replaced the 3270 adapters. In either case, you also needed 3270 terminal emulation software running on the PC to make it work. IBM had that, and it wasn't too long before you had your choice of 3270, token ring, and terminal emulation software from third party vendors as well. What did Apple have?

“I don’t defend any of it because I am not a cult member. Computers and phones are just tools to me; not how I identify my self worth or position in life.”

Ah, there’s the pejorative! I suspected what you really had here was just an ad hominem attack. I didn’t want to just assume it. As it has proven to be here, you are in the “Anti-Apple Cult.” Your self-worth and identity appear to be tied up by being against something.

“If you went to 100 Apple cult members with a petition to allow 16 yo’s to work in factory jobs in the US most would be against it. That is what I object too.”

Ah, yes, the ad hominem reappears on a per paragraph basis. First, it makes your post sound like it was written by a 16 year old. Second, 16 year olds do not work in Apple factories. The factories Apple uses sign contracts to require workers older than 16.

It is worth noting, there has never been a story I’ve seen claiming the same thing about components used in the computers you favor... so, pot meet kettle.

“I do have a BIG problem DELIBERTLY choosing to enrich the Chi-coms over putting production facilities in the US.”

And yet your computers do not come made by elves in Hollow US Trees.

Change the US laws and companies of all kinds will return. Until then, it is a point without meaning.

“Apple cultists will point to the US Mac factory as “see Apple mfgs in the US.” My question is if they can do it once why not all the time? Answer: Because Apple chose to not do it.”

Ah, you found another ad hominem attack. Good for you!

Apple chooses to minimize taxes, like every good business. I would do the same.

What the hell... I just told you..

Or how about you post the answers you expect to your question to support the point you seem to think you make

you say your self your not a computer geek yet you offer some point that you contents is technically relevant?

If you look up wants supported and iphone 4s officially supports ios 8.. if you read on it its a slug running it

if your read on note 1 of same time..people have unofficially run Lollipop.

So whats your point.. new os on old hardware what the point if its a slug..marketing hype?

mad_as_he$$

I really don’t appreciate you using terms like “cult” or questioning the political or sexual alignment of Apple users.

I was a Microsoft Certified Network Administrator. I have built dozens if not hundreds of Windows boxes. I used to be a strident Apple-hater.

When I started my own business I looked seriously at Apple. While I was very capable of handling any hardware/software issues that may (would) have come up with Windows machines, I decided my time was better spent running my company. Not having to mess with malware, viruses, registries, defragging, and poorly timed mandatory updates has been a God-send. Apple allows me to focus on running my company.

BTW, I vote conservative. I attend a church affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. I have been happily married to the same woman for 29 years and I drive a Jeep. I owen six firearms and contribute time and money to pro-life organizations and causes. They don’t come much more red-blooded, conservative American than I and I proudly use Apple products.

Now go shove that up your Windows...

Nonsense. I have two 4S's running iOS 8 and they do just fine with it.

The point is that Android is a fractured market. All Android devices sold today won't even run the current system because it has been modified by the carrier and you know it.

When I use an IOS product it will be pretty much the same as everyone else. Which would you rather develop for? I know when MS DOS was, for all practical purposes, a monopoly everyone loved to develop for it, that carried over to Windows.

99% of people that buy a computer only use it for Web Browser and mail, a few games and maybe Netflix, they just want something that they can turn on and use. Smart Phones that easily and seamlessly link together with their laptop/desktop are what drives the IOS market.

I love how Gamers think they are the only customers that computer marketers should be worried about.

I was a power user 12 years ago, today I am barely a user. I do have some powerful equipment and more storage than the average business, just to satisfy a little hobby I have. I try to keep up with developments in Apple Tech but have less interest in the Windows World. I installed Windows 10 on my Mac running Parallels and am not impressed so far but then I don't really have a need, just a curiosity.

1. So you are an Apple user that is not yet a cult member. OK so don’t be offended by my comments. I NEVER questioned the sexuality of anyone involved in this or other Apple threads.

2. Show me where I ever defended Windows
