It’s happened before, and successfully. Indiana Gov. Thomas Andrews Hendricks did. Ran in 1876 on the Dem ticket with NY Gov. Samuel J. Tilden (who won a majority of the actual vote, but lost the Electoral College). He ran again 8 years later in 1884 and was elected this time with NY Gov. Grover Cleveland.
