What animal lovers will hate about the new Dr. Seuss book
Los Angeles Times ^ | July 28, 2015 | Rene Lynch

The new Dr. Seuss book "What Pet Should I Get?" is about two children who go to a pet store to buy a pet.

That was a commonplace event back in the 1950s or early 1960s, when Dr. Seuss is believed to have written the long-lost book, but it's discouraged today. Which is why the new book comes with a remarkable addendum: A publisher's note urging children to walk on by the pet store and adopt from an animal shelter.

But animal rights activist Ingrid Newkirk, the founder of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said it's not enough and expressed concerns that it could set back the movement to encourage shelters over pet shops. As it is, up to 4 million shelter animals are euthanized each year.

Disingenuous.

PETA believes owning pets causes "immeasurable suffering," and doesn't really want people to have them at all.

Oh for heaven’s sake, must everything come with a warning now? What if the kid wants a freaking hamster? They don’t have shelters for hamsters...or fish. Its a Dr. Seuss book! Should we warn children that the Cat in the Hat may have been a pedofile, and Things One and Two were held in involuntarily servitude? There is enough political correctness in some of his later books without these freaking nannies going into a tither about a pet store. Sheesh!

OK

What about all the non-pet animals?

Flies, rats, aphids, spiders, germs, democrats, snakes, cockroaches, etc.

Even if they are not ‘pets’, are we supposed to feed and house them? Even if they want to invade and take over our lives?

Sorry. Doesn’t pass the sanity test.

I wonder if this representative of PETA is pro-choice.

And very few are killed at pet shops...

The only immeasurable suffering I have ever experienced as a result of owning a pet, dogs in my case, is when one of them passes.

My last one, a German Shorthair Pointer was bought from a breeder who raised the pups in cages. He would place the remains of dead pheasants on top of them after a hunt so the dogs would learn the scent. He was breeding them for himself but decided to part with my boy because he thought he wouldn’t hunt well. Turned out he was right. The dog was not a hunter but maybe the most loyal, warm, right headed creature I have ever met. He passed last year at 16 and I miss him and think about him every day.

I am now the owner of a ten month old female Basset Hound who greets me with slobbery kisses and a wagging tail when I get home from work and is nothing but a ball of love.

Screw PETA.

They do indeed have shelters for hamsters and every other thing that creeps or crawls or flies.

Go to PetFinder.com and you will find every critter from frogs to goats up for adoption.

I don’t know if you noticed but while you were busy with the snake, someone snuck in and painted a tranny cop on your gas tank...
