Gresham man robbed of gun he was openly carrying

A man practicing his open carry right was robbed of the gun he was openly carrying.

William Coleman III was robbed of his Walter- brand P22 just after 2:00 a.m. October 4 in Gresham by a young man who asked him for it — and flashed his own weapon as persuasion.

Coleman, 21, was talking to his cousin in the 17200 block of NE Glisan St., after purchasing the handgun earlier that day, when a young man asked him for a cigarette, police said.

The man then asked about the gun, pulled a gun from his own waistband and said “”I like your gun. Give it to me.”

Coleman handed over the gun and the man fled on foot.

The suspect is thin a black male, between 19 and 23 years old, clean cut with a small patch of facial hair on his chin, and short black wavy hair.

He is roughly six feet tall, wearing grey sweatpants, a white T-Shirt and flip-flop sandals.

The weapon he used in the robbery was described as a possibly semi-automatic, black gun, Gresham Police said.

Anybody who may have information on this case is asked to call the Gresham Police Tips line at 503.618.2719.

I’m right with you on your attitude about strangers approaching to panhandle/get close to you in a parking lot. I’ve had it happen in restaurant parking lot. I grasped the grip (was CC) and told the person to keep moving, I didn’t have anything for him. Unfortunately, my wife remained in condition white and got irritated at me for challenging the guy. He caught a clue and moved off, talking to himself (”Aw, hell no...”) toward another restaurant parking lot to try somebody else.

I still believe my senses were right but have been criticized on gun boards when telling the story and told I overreacted. Since that time, this area of town with restaurants and hotels has become a mini-crime mecca with murders and drug deals in the hotels. I work in the area and have increased my personal watchfulness. Since I work at a school, I can’t actually carry but it is legal to have it in the car in the parking lot.

BTW, I like old school carry myself with my usual choice being a Taurus titanium snubbie in .38 Special +P.

Best to advocate concealed carry, not open. Some folks are disturbed by the sight of guns, others will give you grief about it or call the cops on you.

I think of the gay marriage argument where they say “what is it to you if a gay couple gets married?”

Well, same thing here, “what is it to you if someone has a gun in their pocket?”

It sounds as if you’ve taught your daughter well. That level of perception is commendable for one so young.

The fact that she followed up (watching as the results played out)is a good indicator as well.

“Did you know that recently in Vermont, some libtard newspaper published every single registered gun owner in that state, making them a target for criminals who want some guns? Let’s say that after you’ve noticed a dozen of your neighbors have been targeted by either criminals or police, how many of those guns will you really have access to?”

Vermont has gun registration? Who knew? I thought Vermont's brief experiment in gun control began and ended in the mid-1920s when it was struck down by the state Supreme Court.

Bonus question: Care to tell us which “libtard newspaper” published this list? (If this list exists, it would be over 90 years old now.)

The openly carried pistol was required to be unloaded by law.

This is an old story.

Agree, I see NO reason for open carry. I gave up cowboy make-believe at about 10 years old. Why let the bad guys and liberals know you are carrying? I think it is mostly “bling”... Look at me I have a gun. The whole reason to carry is defense. Open carry immediately targets you as a threat, all surprise is negated.

Guns aren’t registered here. NOBODY knows how many I have or don’t have.

Its nobody’s business, ESPECIALLY not the government’s business how many guns I have... how much ammunition I have.

My “permit” to own a gun was issued in 1792.

First of all, KOIN's reporters and editorial staff need to learn how to spell "Walther". It is not a "Walter" P22. Geez, what idiots.

oops, my bad. It was in New York, 2013, in certain counties. The paper was the Journal News.

Yes, now I remember. That was the Gannett outlet for Westchester-Rockland counties. Publication led to unwanted publicity (unwanted by the staff) of the addresses of certain newspeople down there; the editor was promptly shown the door.

Thank you for the correction. If the tenor of my rejoinder seemed a bit harsh, my apologies.
