In the early 1900’s these babies did not live past age 10. Then as medicine improved it was age 20, then age 30. Now it’s age 60.

Indeed, because of the complications associated with the disease. Besides heart problems, there are often gastrointestinal issues, blockages and such.

Our third child was born with Down Syndrome (I had a miscarriage before he was born when I was several months along). He was born with an intestinal blockage; then had another blockage a few weeks later & died in recovery room after surgery. - I was pretty wrung out after that & due to other considerations couldn’t keep on trying for more.

The Oklahoma Knights of Columbus run this home for intellectually disabled adults in Okarche. One of our Knights in Norman had an adopted Korean daughter with DS. She went to live at the Center when he got too old to take care of her by himself.
