The mother of a man who tried to launch a firework off the top of his head for July Fourth and was killed instantly said Monday she's advocating for stricter controls about who can use the explosives.

Devon Staples, 22, and his friends had been drinking and setting off fireworks Saturday night in a backyard in Staples' eastern Maine hometown, Calais, when the accident happened with a reloadable fireworks mortar tube, police have said.

I don’t know if I pinged you to any of my posts about it but it’s like the bombing of Dresden here every year. War vets must get flashbacks. Not just firecrackers, real fireworks, all over the place, all night. And it’s days later till the last punk kid uses up the last of his stash. Cops do nothing. I felt unsafe walking down the block.

Good grief. Placing a mortar tube on the head without understanding the dynamics
of the thrust and explosion of the event, caused his death.

Nobody to blame accept your son, lady. As tragic as you feel, taking it out
on others isn't going to solve anything.

Btw, what was the cause of death, anybody? I can imagine a broken neck maybe
from the sudden thrust of the projectile trying to get 100ft into the air.

This might be a stooge death. My personal experience with drinking and dangerous stunts is that most young guys, if drunk enough, really believe that the stunts and sound effects the Three Stooges and their stunt doubles achieved are replicable, and w/o risk of serious injury or death.
