Vanity - Need recommendations for a good coffee maker

Posted on 07/04/2015 11:23:42 AM PDT by Perdogg

I just bought a place and I am not a huge fan of coffee, I use diet Mountain Dew to get me started in morning. I realize that if I am going to entertain a lady (or two) at my place I am going to have be able to serve coffee.

My sisters are also big coffee drinkers, and if they visit me, of course, I am going to have to provide them with coffee.

I am looking for a coffee maker that is not too expensive, I am interested in quality, but I do not want one that will restrict the type coffee I can serve. If I want to have Jamaican Blue Mountain, Kona from Hawaii, or Santos from Brazil , or even brew Raffles Tea from Singapore, I want to be able to serve it

Ay recommendations on a coffee maker?

OH you wanted to make COFFEE not Battery Acid, in that case go with either a drip, a French Press or a Kuerig.

You get it from the 12 cup percolator or you get it some place else.

Oh yea, and the press method JoeProbono suggested is also a very good (probably the best) way to make good coffee. I just hate taking them all apart and cleaning them 3 times a day

Agreed. Unless you’ve got some kind of coffee snob that should do just fine. Just put good coffee into it, in the right proportions, and good coffee will come out.

NO! Not a Keurig. Too expensive to keep up, for one. We got a Cuisinart coffee maker @ ~$50 that’s been good. You need good beans. We get Peet’s/ Italian, ground for a cone. Good dark roasted beans make all the difference. Once in a while we get coffee at the market, but who wants to even get UP to that? Life is too short.

BTW, my grandmother made the best coffee all of her life by boiling the grounds in an enamel saucepan (stained an ugly color by the end of her days) and straining it into the cups. She called it “hobo” coffee. Sometimes she put eggshells in it.

I agree with “ask your sisters”. Keurig’s are convenient and the K cups store well, but they are expensive.

Get a good French press and a high end grinder. Takes about the same time, it’s always fresh, and ten times better than drip.

It will take a couple of pots to get the hang of it. But once you do, you will become a coffee legend in your home.

My coffee maker quit working a while back. After I slapped her around a bit, she’s working fine now.

The best thing I've found (especially for high-quality, low volume) is the AeroPress. It's similar to a French press, but with some of the latter's design flaws corrected. What it produces is part-way between regular coffee and espresso. I dilute it about four-to-one to get regular coffee. It works with any kind of beans; and I grind them fairly fine, but not as fine as the grinder goes.

the K cups store well

But they take up a lot of space, if you are going to have any kind of selection. My kids sent us a Keureg, and we took it back and traded it for a winter coat.

"French press and a bean grinder."

Absolutely. My wife and I have used every coffee making process there is, and the French press with fresh-ground beans beats them all.

Check out Bunn coffee makers. I serviced them for years...you can easily learn to de-lime them after a few years down the road. They will lime up if you live in an area with lime in your water. They have many products, with a water line or pour-over. You get what you pay for.

Recommend you select a drip maker that uses the cone shaped filters (Melita type), buy the coffee as whole beans and grind it in the store on a fine or Turkish Coffee setting. I’ve never had a home grinder that would get the coffee fine enough for me. With a fine grind you’ll use less coffee per pot and it will have a fuller flavor. The Mr. Coffee type of machines make a weaker coffee and use more beans to get there. An alternative is a French Press, and that would impress your female visitors with your au courant sophistication. But to me the coffee it produces seems only half brewed with little bits of grounds floating and sticking in your teeth. A decent Espresso machine will get you into serious bucks.
