NFL Lineman and Math Genius vs. Average 23-Year-Old
youtube | 7-1-15 | John Urschel

John Urschel plays football for the Baltimore Ravens. He's also a published mathematician. How does he stack up against the average millennial?

Perhaps he knows the reason for the July 4th holiday?

He’s an admirable guy.

Not the white guy.

Football players have to memorize the playbook.

Funny one

Football Coach’s Complete Offensive Playbook, by Homer Smith
Click on the image of the plays and read the description. I would be lost trying to remember any.

It’s amazing. The smartest guy on the field is almost always an offensive lineman.

He was my daughters TA in Diff. I can match the person now to the stories she told me.

I can't ever get enough John Urschel.

I knew about John Urschel's math prowess from John U. Bacon's book on Big Ten football, "Fourth and Long." You Penn State people can be rightfully proud of him.

The only other pro football player I know of who was an accomplished mathematician was Frank Ryan, quarterback for the Browns in the 1960s. If anyone knows of any others, please post.

It’s cute. But what is the point of the video? I stopped watching because the point seemed to be that this football player is just better than so many other people. Did I miss anything by backing out early?

When I was a graduate student, I taught a course on Discrete Probability Theory. My best student in that class was an offensive lineman, who eventually played for the pros. Now this course is not for the weak students, as it was a theorem-proof course that started with a chapter on sigma algebra. This man was huge, and he had to bend down to enter the classroom. His test papers were perfect, and what a great pleasure it was to have him for a student. He was not a math major, but I honestly think he could have taught the class on his own. He was empirical evidence that not all football players are stupid jocks. The best part of having him for a student was that he challenged me by asking me some very intelligent questions during my lectures. It was because of him that I developed what I call proof-theorem templates, that I still use in my math classes today.

What school were you at when you taught this course? What was the football player’s name, if you don’t mind revealing it?

I never was a Penn State fan, but Paterno had an excellent reputation for helping out former players when needed. So I'm not surprised at all by that story.

Too bad Paterno had to suffer in the last year or two of his life for criminal things his GAY assistant Sandusky did. (There, I said what the MSM never would.)
