Presidential hopeful Rick Perry on Thursday urged the Republican Party to do more to court black voters in the 2016 elections.
"When we gave up on trying to win the support of African-Americans, we lost our moral legitimacy as the party of Lincoln, as the party of equal opportunity for all," the former Texas governor said.
"I'm here to tell you that it's Republicans, not Democrats, who are truly offering black Americans the hope for a better life for themselves and their children," he added. Citing improved educational and economic opportunities during his tenure in Texas, Perry said he would boost the economy as president by reforming the tax code and forcing federal agencies to hold to a strict regulatory budget.
He vowed to push welfare reform and called for splitting money spent on anti-poverty programs into a reformed Earned Income Tax Credit and a block grant for states to administer their own safety nets.
Perry also made a pitch for reforming federal drug-related sentencing policies affecting black Americans and tackling the "exorbitant" price of college and the high cost of living.
Federal programs like ObamaCare and the administration’s order this week expanding pay will cause companies to shed workers while increasing the prices of goods and services, Perry said.
The U.S. needs "new leadership and durable reforms" to provide economic empowerment, he said.
His remarks at the National Press Club come as Republicans hope to shore up support among minority groups following a bitter defeat to President Obama in 2012.

They’ll never vote for him, but it’ll might be worthwhile that Republican’s “un-demonize” themselves enough so they don’t feel the enthusiasm to vote against them 5 times.
How many decades of Republican outreach has to circle the drain before we give up on this.
American minorities must LIKE the dole...because nothing in the Conservative message appeals to them.
Please, will somebody talk reality to Republican leaders, who have divorced themselves from actually understanding the dynamics of normal human interaction, to allow the Academics & their Media puppets to effectively program their reactions on various subjects.
We are losing our heritage because of stupidity--not idealism, not altruism--stupidity, that has allowed itself to be programmed by Marxist influenced theorists, seeking an Egalitarian/collectivist fantasy world.
I just do not have the proper contacts in the right channels to reach these candidates. But reality is a multi-generational concept; and most of our political "leaders," have been sold on pursuing what seems popular to them, at a very brief, very foolish, moment in human history. That sort of thinking has never led to anything worhtwhile.
I believe that is a good move for Rick Perry. However, he should go further by promoting marriage and fatherhood.

When the white vote splits, the Democrats win. When the white vote is unified, the Republicans win.
If you had ever paid attention to Rick’s pandering to LA Raza you would have expected that he will support open borders every time.
Does that make them pitch black voters?
Why would a black vote for a GOP candidate? The GOP isn’t promising cell phones and other free crap in return for votes.

This is a losing proposition. The GOP candidates need to be exciting the GOP base to get out and vote. Blacks and Hispanics vote Democrat. Get over it.
The only person who may steal a few Black and/or Democrat votes is Trump.
