Any one here know anything about the Timing Belt on a 2004 Chevy Aveo?

No engine runs without one.

My 57 has a chain not a belt and my 67 Camaro I installed gears in my souped up engine.

The reason I bring this up is not to rag on Aveos but because I think the new cars are unfixable. The tradeoff is gas mileage, but I’m working on that.

I got T-boned by an 8-pointer a couple of years ago. No fun.

“My car also has a timing chain.”

Still no guarantee for an interference engine. Had a Nissan Axxes mini van years ago. Had a funny rattle ever since new. One day at 50K miles it crapped out in the road. Trying to restart it, something went very wrong. Turns out they had a problem with defective hydraulic chain tensioners in that model. Skipped a tooth or two and pow, rebuilt engine time.

Timing chains and gears can last many years. (Well they can on the cars that don’t have the phenolic gears). Belts need to be changed often.Planned obsolescence?

I drive an astonishingly reliable car - an old Jaguar. My friends owe big bucks on and spend big money fixing their computer-controlled oh so averaga-looking high dollar disposables, waiting and wishing my jaw-droppingly gorgeous old machine would find itself in the shop...

I’m not a YouTube fan but when my lawnmower conked out I found a YouTube video that showed me exactly how to fix it.

Those are actually pretty good engines if you keep a fresh belt on them. The car is Daewoo with a Doosan engine I believe. They put them in warehouse size forklifts too.

Ah! So!

My 97 Sonoma 4 cyl is listed as non-interference. The timing chain tensioner broke free and wrapped around the crank sprocket. On first observation the valves looked OK. However every valve stem was slightly bent.

If auto makers used gears the consumers would complain about the noise. I wouldn’t.

I have never replaced a timing belt

I vaguely remember something about my Honda recommending it to be replaced at 100K = I have 300K on it and it still runs like new

I always buy Honda’s now...

Honda and Toyota are my favorites, though I had really good luck with a 1977 Subaru DL I bought brand new. After all expenses, including even insurance, and selling it at 140k miles, it cost me six cents a mile to drive. You can barely bicycle commute for that these days. I know, I’ve done the math.

What impala said. If you are reasonably good with tools this is not a bad job. That said interference engines are bad news especially if it broke a piston. Put a belt on it yourself and see if it runs.

“The tradeoff is gas mileage, but I’m working on that.”

I would just grab a JC Whitney (are they still around?) catalog and start ordering parts. Every part says it will increase mileage 10 or 20%. If you order 10 of these, theoretically you will have to pump gas out of it periodically!

I still laugh at all of those descriptions and hype.

They changed it when your water pump went out and you don’t remember.
I bet I could peel the cogs off your belt with my fingers.
