Microsoft backtracks blog post containing apparent "Free" Windows 10 upgrade promise for all preview testers
Microsoft has been forced to quietly edit a misleading blog post that seemed to suggest that anyone could get their mitts on Windows 10 for free – if they first installed a test version of Redmond's upcoming operating system for PCs.
The only caveat appeared to be that folk had to use a Microsoft Account (MSA) that's connected to the firm's Windows Insider program.
Microsoft had said that a freebie upgrade would then be applied for anyone who has installed its latest Windows 10 preview (build 10130). And that promise seemed to stand even for users who didn't have Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 previously installed on their PCs.
Windows boss Gabe Aul had said in a blog post on Friday:
Windows Insiders running the Windows 10 Insider Preview (Home and Pro editions) with their registered MSA connected to their PC will receive the final release build of Windows 10 starting on 29 July ...However, that apparent slip of the tongue (use of the word "activated") has now been removed from the post.As long as you are running an Insider Preview build and connected with the MSA you used to register, you will receive the Windows 10 final release build and remain activated.
Once you have successfully installed this build and activated, you will also be able to clean install on that PC from final media if you want to start over fresh.
And Aul has since added this clarification: "It’s important to note that only people running Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 can upgrade to Windows 10 as part of the free upgrade offer."

Microsoft is determined to have everyone get Windows 10 as they will in the future charge you each year for it like they are for Office. If you don’t pay they will block you from using it except to get your files off the pc.
Once they do this I suspect free Linux will become more and more popular.

Yes charging. And every .x release they charge for I believe. Not much but it’s typically $30 I think.
All the Windows 7 and Windows 8 users are not going to jump to Windows 10.
Windows 7 is great, but gets cut off in 2020. Most businesses did not go from Windows 7 to Window 8 platform. That’s not even debated. Microsoft admits it. Hence, Windows 10.
Since Windows 7 will be no longer supported in 2020 and that most businesses are using the iPhone. I see most of them migrating over to the more secure and reliable platform of Apple.

I said the Apple “Platform” meaning Apple desktops and laptops.
The only reason I mentioned the iPhone is to show you a bridge that business are already 1/2 way there.
You do know Apple doesn’t really do business support, right. They have the mentality of consumer first...if businesses want to use it so be it. I doubt they will be competing at the business level long term unless they make some big changes.
I see businesses dumping iPads for Surfaces and Chromebooks every day.
Do they promise drivers that work for all your periferals?

A lot of people associate Chrome books as hacked by the NSA. It’s why Google sales are waning.
As for Microsoft Surface it’s sales compared to Chromebooks and iPads is a blip on the radar.
Apple in October will be rolling out the iPad Pro. Which is a 12” screen vs. the current 9.7” iPad. I think it will be a hot item this Christmas.
iOS 9.0 will be very good too. The size of it is 1 GB vs. almost 4 GB from iOS 8. So anyone on an older Apple Device will have room for it. It has A.I. in it that will make your battery last 3 hours longer. They have a new software too that is on iOS 9 that makes all your Apps run 8x faster. So anyone with an old Apple device should really speed up. Siri will be a lot more advance and Apple Maps too. Nevertheless, Apple is still playing catch up to Google on the maps.
Google was also first with the fast software, even with a slow internet connection, while Apple and Microsoft is now coming up with similar software in their OS. However, they are still far behind the curve.
Overall I think Microsoft will do okay with Windows 10, but I don’t think they will have the same market saturation as they did with Windows 7 or Windows XP.
iPads are consumer items brought into work. Businesses are “dealing” with them because their VPs are saying they want to use the iPad. But when businesses pay for the devices they are buying Windows based products and often buy the Surface Pro device. The surface pro 3 is really a great device.
Consumer focused businesses use iPads though (like ATT has their sales reps using them).

IT is always changing and consumers can easily switch from Apple to Google to Microsoft to (fill in the blank). It’s just an upgrade cycle to replace devices. The more cloud based things are the easier it is to replace the device. Now once the data is in the cloud it’s a bit more tricky moving off that vendors platform, but it can be done.

Apple hasn't charged for even the MAJOR version releases of OS-X or their applications, in many years. They come free with the purchase of the hardware, and are updated for free for the life of the product.
What you're probably thinking of is that if you buy certain large applications (e.g. the iLife suite apps like iMovie) without a hardware purchase there's a nominal charge, $15-20.
But the operating system versions and upgrades are all free. Charge for "every .x release"? You're dangerously high. Thorazine, perhaps, is indicated. :-)

Of course Apple wraps the development engineering and business costs into the price of a Mac. They're in business -- hello?? No one has ever claimed otherwise. That's one reason Macs have a reputation for being pricey -- they make you pay up front for the entire product, instead of parceling it out piecemeal like most race-to-the-bottom manufacturers. The tech whore writer you linked in #36 above points this out and then -- as if it's a big shock and surprise -- notes that Apple actually does not try to lose money on their products.
Say what? You mean they're actually in business to make money? OH. MY. GOD. Filthy capitalists, no doubt.

Among my roomful of machines I have a couple Apple computers, the newest (a few years old) being a Mini with 10.9. I know precisely how much (actually, how little) I've paid out in "upgrades" for their software over the years. So the last thing I need, first thing in the morning, is someone who by their own description has far less experience than I do with the topic, trying to give me a hard time and calling names.
