SLIDELL, LA (WVUE) -

A nine year old boy made a touching gesture to a Slidell police officer, but the officer had one regret about the chance meeting, so he reached out to the public for help.

Officer Joe McMahan was driving when another person asked him to pull over. After pulling over, a woman asked if she could give something to McMahan.

The nine year old, identified as Jayden Witsell, stepped out of the passenger side of the car and approached the police cruiser. The boy asked if he could give something to Witsell.

"For a moment, I didn't know what to expect. The young man handed me an envelope that stated 'police lives matter' and on the opposite side said 'God bless,'" McMahan said in a post on Facebook.

The envelope contained a St. Michaels coin. The card inside said, "Keep this coin in your pocket. Thank you for putting your life on the line to keep me and others safe. God Bless, Jayden Witsell, 9 years old."

I know this Officer. He is a great guy and the guy you hope is pulling you over if you happened to get stopped here.

St Michael is the patron of police.

I watched “The Untouchables” this afternoon on TV.

I could swear he said “St. Jude” was the patron Saint of cops.

I may have misunderstood tho as my hearing is getting worse.

Police Officer's Prayer to St. Michael

Saint Michael, heaven's glorious commissioner of police, who once so neatly and successfully cleared God's premises of all its undesirables, look with kindly and professional eyes on your earthly force.

Give us cool heads, stout hearts, and uncanny flair for investigation and wise judgement.

Make us the terror of burglars, the friend of children and law-abiding citizens, kind to strangers, polite to bores, strict with law-breakers and impervious to temptations.

You know, Saint Michael, from your own experiences with the devil that the police officer's lot on earth is not always a happy one; but your sense of duty that so pleased God, your hard knocks that so surprised the devil, and your angelic self-control give us inspiration.

And when we lay down our night sticks, enroll us in your heavenly force, where we will be as proud to guard the throne of God as we have been to guard the city of all the people. Amen.

The last line sounds like a verse from “Mansions of the Lord.” Thank for posting the prayer.

I read “The Untouchables” back in the early 60s when I was in high school and when the TV show was on. BTW, Robert Stack made a better Eliot Ness. Costner was OK tho.

The movie was not historically accurate except for bits and pieces. For instance they really did switch juries.

None of the Untouchables actually died.

The biggest thing they used to get info on not just Capone but members of his gang was through wire taps which were a fairly new tool at the time.

That’s a wonderful story, and a necessary element of healing in these times of tension.

Even in spite of the fact that the handwriting on that card is NOT a nine-year-old’s.

In my daily rounds on patrol it’s the kids I encounter that remind me of what my uniform stands for. I’ll have street gang members with their families in a store or on the street, and when their kids see me they will wave and smile at me. The kids seems to instinctively understand what we are supposed to be. When I realize too late that I didn’t notice a child waving at me as I drive by it really bugs me bad. I always want to acknowledge them as they are usually our biggest fans. Sometimes...our only fans.
