Why Americans secretly love a gladiatorial blowhard like Donald Trump
The Week ^ | June 19, 2015 | James Poulos

Admit it. You're glad Donald Trump is running for president.

Maybe you think his candidacy will be a hoot. Maybe you think it will sink the fortunes of your political opponents. Maybe his candidacy has inspired you to deliver a high-minded lament of our corroding national character. Maybe you're actually a Trump true believer. (They do exist! Trump is in a respectable fifth place in New Hampshire, according to Real Clear Politics.) One way or another, you're probably going to take some pleasure from Trump 2016.

And let's admit this, too: Deep down, many of us are glad Trump is running because we're addicted to the sort of vapid, stakes-less bloodsport that has become his specialty.

uh...Trump is a Democrat Stalking Horse for hillary

(why do you capitalize her name. She's not worthy of it)

You're Doing It! I want to talk about the good the Trump can do, stirring things up and telling it like it is. You want to pull off the "be afraid, be very afraid" routine.

That's not what the Trump campaign is about. We need a bigger-than-life personality in the running and just enjoy the ride.

How about the positives and some acknowledgement of just how fed up many, if not most, US citizens are with the political class?

Under the category of “Gladitorial Blowhards,” the answer is ... Jesse Ventura.”

[Ding]

Alex: IronJack?

Me: Who is the mentally challenged musclehead actually elected by the loopy citizens of Minnesota to serve as governor?

Alex: Correct. I would also have accepted “brain-dead loudmouth” or “certifiable cretin.”

Bill Clinton especially loves blowhards. Ask Monica.

I had lunch with Ross at the Dell cafeteria in Plano I Was at Dell for a class and Ross knew my relative I met for lunch.

The guy is very funny and charming and very candid.
He made the lunch hour fly by.

I disagree with this article, it isn’t imaginary slights and a failure of national character that causes us to view with alarm shipping the jobs overseas and bringing cheap temporary labor here (some of it hostile) as an unsustainable model.

It isn’t the product of a desire to live vicariously that causes us to be alarmed when again and again Congress refuses to abide by its raison d’etre.

Trump is not so much playing gladiator, it’s more like Pied Piper.

The thing about Trump is, he will just lead the people he fools out into a field and drop them there, other sweet-talking liars won’t be so nice.

I agree .
Trump could blow away these tired facades and tell it like it is.

He will unmask these frauds from both parties before bowing out from the race. The gop main candidates are all owned by various Billionaires so why can't a Billionaire call them out for the Bought off K street whores they are.

After this TPA treason we have only various snakes pretending to be conservative while lying to our faces and selling us out to a radical left Soros puppet and Goldman Sachs and fat cat Hedge fund billionaires .

The US looks just like the billionaires in Russia that keep KGB henchman Putin in power but at least Putin does not his country and his base voters like our Gop.

The word hate got dropped by spell check.

I meant to add that Evil Putin does not hate his base unlike our Gop candidates and Leaders.

A lot of “maybes” in that post. The real one is that “maybe” we’ll be able to count on him to get some information out there that people need to hear. No; he won’t win. But a lot of what he says is true and because he’s an entertainer people will hear him — and maybe even listen.

What is especially important is that he isn’t one of the establishment clowns. He is on his own, and quite immune to the other clowns. I’ll go for him, just for that reason.

Uh, yup. People are sick and tired of being forced to measure every syllable that comes out of their mouth. Not only that, but we seem just short of having the thought police come and arrest people.

There you go bringing facts into a discussion.

How many times have reason and facts won out over passion and rhetoric?
Ya gotta have a catchy zinger of a catch phrase too.
And maybe a cutesy jingle that sticks in the mind.

You’re preaching to the choir on my end.
The Donald knows how to make money for the Donald, not the average person.

I think his economic plans, tariffs, taxes would be a disaster for us.
Sure, we could raise tariffs on imported goods.
Then our trading partners would raise tariffs on our exports and unemployment would shoot to the moon.
No one wins when you artificially raise the cost of goods you import.
No one.

“Trump is a Democrat Stalking Horse for Hillary”

Trump told Hannity that Hillary could probably go to jail over the email fiasco, and that if a Republican did what she did, he would. How, exactly, could that statement be used to exalt Hillary?

If they have tariffs on us then we should put them on them.

He will certainly appeal to the low info GOP voters, but anyone that is willing to do a small amount of research will find that in the past he has supported abortion, he has suported a wealth tax of 14% and now he supports a very high tarriff. All are terrible ideas that would harm liberty and our economy.

Well this low information voter is trying to survive on 1965 wages while paying 4 bucks a pound for hamburger and 4 bucks a gallon for milk...And 5 dollars a box for cereal...

This low information voter has enough information to know that my country is being over run by muzlim terrorists and knows that there are millions of Americans on welfare and millions more who have given up looking for work due to the influx of (far more than 11) millions of illegals from across the border...

This low information voter knows we are about to lose our American sovereignty when this European trade bill gets passed...

So tell us low information voters which of these politicians should appeal to us...

Very well put, I will vote for Trump over any of these lying professional politicians every day. I want to be lied to by someone with a few billion dollars and a stake in America.
