Ever notice the countries these ships are registered too? Never US, always Europe or maybe Bermuda. I’ve been on a few cruses and always take note of that..... I’ve never seen one registered here. Once you get on one it’s like being in a foreign country.
Horrible. He gets 30 years; she gets a life sentence!
cruses = cruises
Zoroastrian? Mennonite?
Back in the 1960s, when my folks took us on a few family cruises, it was very different. The cruise line controlled the staff, and workers had long term jobs and all spoke the same language.
Now, the cruise lines franchise out a lot of what's done on the ship. The rooms are franchised to some corporation that scours the globe for compliant, competent, and cheap labor. Every cruise, some staff come and some go, because they sign contracts for the franchiser for a year (or so). So, there's no assurance that the crew members can even communicate or know each other very well.
My last cruise I found that the person identified as my attendant worked with someone else (not identified by name) who also had access to my room. I was uncomfortable with anyone but Assad having access to my room without my knowledge. The cruise before, two of us gals had trouble with a creepy passenger and had to figure out for ourselves which Phillipino had taken it upon himself to deal with problems effectively and quickly (the chain for authority was useless). It was kind of weird that a group of Philipino employees had taken it upon itself to monitor things.
The whole thing means a cruiser has to keep their eyes wide open. The cruise mentality seems to be "nothing can go wrong, until it does go wrong".
Lessee, that was on Final Jepoardy last night...
There was a congregation of passengers outside the door while she was screaming for 45 minutes...and no one thought to kick the door in?
Really? Are you fricking kidding me?
Where the heck are the men in this world?
Cruise ship company CEOs, like the pro-immigration crowd, they want cheap labor and, not surprisingly, the people on board want the cheap fares.
Most importantly, though, is the fact that the guy is Muslim, the religion where all that he did is perfectly OK.
Yes, they are allowed to apply, but most likely tossed by the person doing the hiring.
The workers on these ships work very long hours for months at a time. None of these ships are American flagged vessels. Therefore, they do not have to abide by US laws. There is no 40 hour work week. I would think it is more like 75-100 hours/week. Wages are low. There is no minimum wage at sea even though they may be operating in US waters.
If there is a crime committed against you while on the vessel, you are pretty much on your own. If you are lucky you might be in British waters. If you are some place in the Caribbean, you are subject to their laws not ours. If you are at sea, there may not be a countries jurisdiction that applies.
For all the above mentioned reasons, I will not step foot on these major cruise ships. You young woman, travelling alone would be crazy to go on these cruises. Rapes happen all the time on these ships. Almost all go unreported because it is almost impossible to bring the culprit to justice. I would guess that the perp in this situation, probably had done this before, and the victim did not press charges.
absolutely awful...a lot of it has to do with the ships (and companies) you cruise on....
Balinese name. Likely Hindu.
Only works if you are in the room and nobody is in there already.
‘Nudist’ cruise. I’m guessing noisy, rough sex isn’t that unusual on this type of cruise.
CEO’s of companies have a fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders. If they feel that they have to hire from other countries, or fly under different countries’ flags, the root cause is almost always some well meaning Dem politicians and various RINOS passing laws to “protect the poor”, and in reality incentivize business to not hire the poor in the first place (prime example is the minimum wage). So let’s not fall into the Lib trap of “greedy CEO’s” on this one, though I totally criticize them on other governance issues.
Interesting post (#30). Is there any cruise line flag that is better than any other? For example, would you have more confidence in a Norwegian-flagged ship over one flagged in, say, Panama?
The visual of her injuries are lawyers’ wet dreams. However, thank God that there doesn’t appear to be any permanent physical injuries, and her biggest challenge long term will be the mental anguish of the attempted rape and physical abuse.
On a cerebral level, taking a step back, does she deserve the combined $415 Million she’s asking? Can someone say “lottery” in terms of such obscene amounts? When I saw that, I immediately saw my sympathy for her plummet. Especially since the main guilty party is the crew member, and the worst that the company did was to not think through their processes. $415 Million for that? Capitalism is being destroyed one lawsuit at a time.
***Seems to happen a lot on these ships with dodgy crewmen.***
I remember seeing a woodcut from an old POLICE GAZETTE from around the 1880s showing the same thing, a steward attacking a woman passenger.
Then in the comic sense, there is the scene from the movie CARRY ON, FOLLOW THAT CAMEL in which a woman is traveling to north Africa to fine her lover.
That's true of every cruise line. Holland America recruits a lot of their staff from Indonesia.
