MILPITAS (CBS/AP) — A recycling center in the Silicon Valley is looking for a woman who dropped off an old Apple computer that turned out to be a collectible item worth $200,000.

Victor Gichun of Clean Bay Area says the woman dropped off boxes of electronics that she had cleaned out from her garage after her husband died.

She didn’t want a tax receipt or leave her contact information, and it wasn’t until a few weeks later that workers at the recycling center opened the boxes to discover an Apple I (one) computer inside.

It was one of only about 200 first-generation Apple computers made in 1976.

Gichun sold the computer to a private collection, and he wants to split the proceeds with the mystery donor.

Widow drops off boxes of her late husband's old electronics to the recycling center and doesn't leave her name. Several days later workers open a box and find one of the under 200 original Apple 1 computers worth over $200,000 in the box! The recycling center is looking for the woman because the collector who bought it wants to share the proceeds of the sale with her! — PING!

No, the recycling center wants to share the proceeds, not the buyer.

I doubt the buyer wants to pay any more than he already has.

One guy on Ebay has one for $399.

Another guy has one for $80 minimum bid. But - zero bids so far. Oh well - you weren’t really going to sell it anyway!

my guess the collector is hopping she has other items of historical significance from that time. maybe some notes on the development of programing or even promotional material from that time

When you look for items on eBay after your first search... if you look at the list on the far left side of the screen .... look toward the bottom of the list .... it says to look for “COMPLETED ITEMS ONLY”.

That is a list of items that have sold.

So the item is worth about $99.00.

Hi, I'm Bill Gates from Microsoft. We have a large collection of vintage computers running our DOS software. Well, they used to run the DOS software but after all these years the memory boards are sort of fried.

Anyways, we got a whole roomful of them. Anybody wanting one for a souvenir is welcome to come on by and take one of these. Just come on over.

Anybody out there?

There were just 200 of these 1st ten machines produced. You just know a few of these are still tucked away and forgotten in attics. Can you imagine spotting one of these babies at a garage sale?!

What is a little misleading with the picture is that the 1st machines were electronics only. No case, as was typical of hobbyist computers of that vintage.

WAIT! The recycling center sold it to someone who’s going to put it on a shelf?

That doesn’t sound like recycling to me.

I’m trying to remember what level our first Apple was. I’m thinking it was a 2e. I bought it to run the professional software I bought. The computer was definitely not made out of wood. Which came first, the 2e or the 2c?

Our local Goodwill stopped taking them over a year ago. You need to buy a $29 permit just to put them out for the trash to pick up. Probably something similar in play here. She was probably happy to save whatever the fee was in California.
