“though she did not address the physical aspect of the practice”

And you don’t suspect writer exaggeration?

“I truly, in 16 years, have never seen so much hatred directed at one family . I’m honestly not sure I’m on the right forum anymore....”

Feel exactly the same way.

And the lies... apparently if a person does not agree with things like having Josh Duggar castrated, doused with gasoline, and set on fire, then the person loves, approves of, and promotes incest (and is probably molesting young female members of the family as well).

There is no evidence of any such thing.

“Taylor asked if they leave any bruising [redacted] said no.”

That YOU wish to believe they are hitting infants with rods shows that YOU have a major envy or other type of problem. I’m sorry but I’m sick of this and I’m sick of pseudo conservatives neo Republicans piling on and hanging on every MSNBC talking point.

“It also includes putting something the child wants just off the blanket.”

“Even more sick.”

Unless the kid is dumber than my Australian Shepard, there is no need to use a rod.

Instead, tell the kid or the dog to Stay and if they do for one one minute, five minutes or ten minutes, they get positive reinforcement.

It takes a dog five minutes to learn to stay.

However, my guess us that the Duggars are Dumber than a Doberman.

"And you don’t suspect writer exaggeration?"

From what I just read, it isn't exaggeration. Michelle Duggar says on her blog that she uses blanket training; a simple google search proved that the description in #7 is accurate.

Mine was a plum tree, and when the Teacher wacked me at School, I got it at home again. Have a lot less trouble if they still did it.

You might want to do some more reading about Michael Pearl and his book “To Train Up A Child”.

The Duggars say on their blog that this is the method they use to raise their children.

Some real sick abusive stuff like using plumbing to beat your child. This has been linked to the death of children.

We're talking about the "blanket training" of infants, not bruises on the older children. Michelle Duggar advocates the practice on her blog.

Where are you getting that I claimed the Duggars "hit infants with rods"? I directed you to post # 7 for the process being discussed, but never mind. The people who idolize those creepy cult members will keep fawning over their heroes, regardless of any facts.

Yep.

And where in the Bible does it say to use the rod to hit a child?

It couldn’t be...I don’t know...symbolic? Maybe a shepherds rod for GUIDANCE?

No, no...it must be used to strike.

I was the oldest of five, and my father was pretty hard physically on me. He would give me swats, often with my mother saying “Don, don’t you think that is enough?”

My four younger siblings got much less of the physical punishment. I turned out pretty rebellious, and I believe they reasoned maybe that he drove me out and away.

I think my mother might admit it to others, but not to me ought of embarrassment. She is 90 now and no point to make her feel bad.

I forgive any excess, as they did the best they could, with what they knew. I honestly believe my father believed it was for the better, and probably followed the way his father and his father before behaved.

But another version is that my great-grandfather, an immigrant from Sweden, was later run out of town in South Dakota for his violence with his family.

I had that feeling the other day when I was told that what Josh Duggar did was perfectly harmless and normal behavior for boys.

I never got in trouble at school. I knew if I did, no one would have to tell my parents because my mom would already know about it. She and my brother told the story about what happened to him at an away football game. Before he got home she told my dad to get things ready that he had broken his arm at the game. Sure enough, when he got home his arm was already in a cast. After my daughter’s funeral in 2004, we were talking. She asked me if she had been at the funeral and I told her no but she started telling where we sat, what songs were sung, etc. My mom was an amazing Christian lady who was loved by all. We all miss her.

Oh, I was being semi facetious. I get a little ill by how some people around here disrespect children. Children is my world.

And I even spanked 2 of the 4 so far: my rule is a light surprising swat on the tush between the ages of 3-6 if needed, you never need to spank a child older than 6. The middle son only needed a stern voice and as a tot he would melt into tears. He was actually correctable by normal voice commands. I have one more to go and so far she is doing fine with no spanking.

I’m so sorry about what happened to you. Child abuse doesn’t stay on one side of a political aisle.

It is not conservative to beat children or to reign with ultimate control freakishness over children.

Conservative parenting means, to me, to protect the child from harm and to inspire them to explore independently, to learn about the world, and to feel very confident of themselves. Only then will we have people strong enough to resist society and media and stand up for freedom and justice.

The stupid, cruel Duggars, beating a baby who attempts to explore his world, are raising cold, cruel, insecure people who will either get pleasure out of slavishly following authority or out of similarly controlling and beating innocents.

I agree to a point, but you may not be aware of some of the books on Christian parenting out there. They go far enough that some of their advice could lead to abuse. Young parents determined to do things “right” buy into the methods and systems by these non mainstream authors.

It’s probably a response to the permissive parenting of the past few generations, but I read a few and had to step back and realize how harsh and unrealistic they were. Parenting is hard and my generation of women were raised to be successful at their careers. Anything you want, you can achieve by sheer determination. Funny how a 25 pound toddler can bring you to your knees. We were not ready for the sacrifice and patience that parenting requires.

I’ve seen parents of babies follow crazy, potentially dangerous, advice claiming to be biblical. An example is Babywise and the strict adherence to parent led feeding rather than demand feeding for a NEWBORN. Good grief, when a six week old is crying from hunger, nurse your baby. I’ve seen parents rock, sing to and try to calm a baby screaming with hunger because they were training it to know that the parents had authority over them. Parent led feeding on a schedule was a way to train them in that. A couple of problems with that. One, breastmilk/formula is the only way for a baby to quench their thirst as well as hunger. Secondly, if a baby often gives up when it’s need to eat is not met and is then not willing to really eat when the schedule allows it.

I know a mom whose doctor yelled at her that her baby was starving right in front of her eyes, and once she ditched the Babywise method her daughter thrived. I’ve seen a young couple firmly state their child’s name and say “No hand” while pulling her hand out of her mouth and squeezing it. They didn’t want her sucking her hand. The baby was three weeks old.

So many Christians want to do things right and can be so sold on a book they read that they, for all practical purposes, treat that book as the bible. When the kids don’t respond exactly as the book promises, it can lead to abuse. At the very least, the blanket method of training is a cruel way to treat infants.

I know the Duggars followed methods with the best of intentions. Our friends were well intentioned also, but they hammered us over and over about how “Raising Kids God’s Way” is truly the only biblical way to the point where they were blind to it’s flaws and their children suffered. I told you so is not a biblical response, but it is human nature to do so.

” Honestly, I have never heard of anything like it. I believe corporal punishment (spanking) works.

But hitting a baby every time it tries to crawl off a blanket? And some here want to say criticism of that is based on “envy”?”

I agree with you.

“My mother pulled my hair as a punishment.”

Mine did not! Certainly when I was a baby!! Don’t get me wrong, mine punished me but not by pulling my hair.

I didn’t know anything about these “Christian parenting” methods, but they sound very 19th century and very harsh.

Whapping an older kid on the backside with a wooden spoon (my favorite method, and I actually broke that well-used spoon on my 6 yr old son’s backside after some particularly dangerous stunt that he was leading his little sisters out on) is one thing. But hitting babies?

I’ve never liked the Duggars because I thought there was something phony there, but I didn’t know that they were carrying out some kind of program. Thanks for sharing, this makes it all more intelligible.

This. By using what they did to hammer you, the true intentions (moral superiority) were evident.

I for one am glad this is being brought to light. This sick unbiblical stuff needs to be exposed for what it truly is - an attempt at being better than everyone else.
