Certain Text Message Can Cause iPhone to Crash

A nasty computer bug in Apple’s iOS allows anyone who sends an iPhone a certain text message — with specific Latin and Arabic characters — to shut it down.

The worst part? You don’t even need to open the text message. Your device just needs to receive it.

That means anyone can pull off this prank — and anyone whose mobile number is known by someone else is susceptible

Do not send “Deus vult” and “Allah akbar” in the same text. They will fight.

Too bad there’s not an internet equivalent of artillery counterbattery fire. One that blows up in the virus senders’ faces!

Apple may release an iOS 8.3.1 update to fix this problem probably by tomorrow morning, since they are aware of the bug.

However, the best way to get that update is to connect your iPhone to a computer that has iTunes 11.4 or later installed, since that supports all iPhones that run iOS 8.3. When connected to the computer, iTunes will download and install the update without using a Wi-Fi connection.

A malicious text message sent from a non iPhone to an iPhone can cause your iPhone to shut down when it displays the notification. . . It works with any app that is set to display a notification to the screen and also reset the Apple Watch. It fails to work with iMessages sent from iPhones to iPhones. . . so it is something in MMSmessging that does not work in iMessaging the same way. Quick fix if it was a "friend" who sent the "prank" is to have them send a second message from the same number to scroll the offending message off the notifications cue. . . apparently you can also receive any other message then delete the conversation including the offending text. There was a similar string that would cause the same issue last year that Apple fixed if put in iOS Safari's URL address field. — PING!

Yep, my recollection is right. . . IOS 6 in 2013

WARNING: DON'T VISIT THE LINK BELOW ON AN IPHONE A colleague of mine, who works in the technology field, told me that there is a specific text string that can crash any iPhone (specifically iOS 6) which tries to display it.

He alleges that the string will crash Safari if it's on a web page. But of greater impact, if it is messaged to an iPhone it will cause the messaging app to crash every time it's opened.

He also sent me a link that is supposed to make iPhones crash.

The colleague who told me about this is a reasonably smart guy, with a degree in computer science specialising in security (among other things), so I consider him a trustworthy source.

Does this string in the above link crash iPhones?

Same string. . .

Damn auto correction.

Like the guy who apologized to his neighbor via text message for taking advantage of his wife while he way away. Right after the guy went upstairs and shot his wife dead for cheating on him with the neighbor, he received a second text from next door.

It read, "Sorry... wife=wifi - d@mned auto-correct got me again."

That’s why I like my two cans and a piece of string.

For the younger people out there, that’s what kids used to falk with the kid next door years and years ago.

Any operating system or programming language that crashes based on incoming data, or allows data to execute as an instruction, is a piece of junk.
