For history try Texas state history museum . It’s with in walking distance of the capital . You could also do the university tower tour.
For fun there is stand-up paddle boarding on Town Lake . Live music at the Mohawk downtown and the continental club on congress .
For b-b-q try Style Switch on north Lamar .
Tacos try Torchies trailer park on south main . That’s the original one .
Austin is a hipster loser town. If you like the smell of urine and weed 6th street is where you need to go. You are better off going to Gruene or one of the smaller outlier towns.
When you are in Austin don’t miss the gay bars. There are a lot of them loaded with very friendly patrons.

The bats are here. I watched them last week.
http://www.tenoakaustin.com/ for happy hour during the weekdays. Awesome baked brie and pulled pork nachos. can get both for about $12; and it will be a great meal for two people.
Great selection of whiskeys too.
There is twang in all the bars on 6th street (I think it’s 6th) all afternoon on the weekends. More fender telecasters than you can count.
If Junior Brown is playing the Continental Club - just across the bridge from downtown) - GO! Bill Kirchen as well.
Can’t remember the name of the barbecue place we ate it, about 20 minutes out of town.
If you are thinking steak, just avoid Perry’s. Salty to the point of inedible. As was the salad.
The Salt Lick ?
It was a few years back but I think (after a bit of googling) it might have been County Line.
My wife was meeting with some folks from Dell, and I went along for the ride. They suggested the restaurant.
BBQ at the Ironworks.
Delbert's "Jealous Kind" was the soundtrack to my 1980's. When it broke, the (then) Great Malaise was officially over.
You all rock. Thank you so much for the suggestions. People will be shocked When tell them my agenda now.
Hi FRiends. The first few days in Austin have been awesome. My new work mates are conservatives to boot. We had a great lunch at Catfish Parlor today, and tomorrow is BBQ and beer. Saturday we will bring out the heavy artillery and hit the range. I couldn’t be happier. Texas really is what America is supposed to represent.
I probably won’t get downtown to see a lot of the recommendations you all have mentioned, as I’m near the Capital of Texas highway, but I should be back here a few times a year to check out more of the scenery.
