Apple launches new 15-inch MacBook Pro with Force Touch trackpad

Apple on Tuesday issued an update to its 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, adding faster Intel processors, as well as the new pressure-sensitive Force Touch trackpad.

The new trackpad, previously available on the 13-inch MacBook Pro and 12-inch MacBook, has built-in force sensors and a Taptic Engine that delivers haptic feedback. It allows users to click anywhere with a uniform feel, and users can even customize the amount of pressure needed to register each click.

Force Touch opens up a range of new gestures, including the new force click. Developers can tap into these expanded capabilities with new APIs available in the latest builds of OS X Yosemite.

That’s a mostly optimized rMBP 13” - you can get a processor bump to a little higher, but where I’d likely focus on the most would be storage. I’ assuming graphics work would take up a fair amount of space, so you might want to see about finding one with 512GB or even 1TB.

Mine’s older and therefore lower-spec’d than that (about 2.5gHZ, 8 MB RAM, 256GB HD), but it’s still a very responsive machine. For professional graphics, I’d go as high end as I could reasonably afford.

Awesome, but I will not buy a MB pro until they make it lose some weight. I know it will never weight as much as the new MacBook, but I want it to get lighter.

The 13" MacBook Pro with Haptic Feedback ForceTouch trackpad weight 3.48 pounds with up to 10 hour usage. The 15" is 4.49 pounds with up to 9 hour usage. . . The Sony Vaio 15" competitor for the MacBook Pro with similar specs weights 5.73 pounds and offers 4 hours of usage.

You are going to have to wait a few more years before that weight will come down much more than that.

I refuse to swap Mavericks for Yosemite. I have heard terrible things about Yosemite.

I've been using Yosemite with no problems. What problems have you been hearing about? It's at OS X.10.3 now and any issues you may have heard about have been handled.

Good info, thanks!

You are welcome. . . my last MacBook Pro weighed in 6.3 pounds and was a real bear to lug around, especially with the accessories.

Late 2014 15 inch MBP at 4.5 pounds is perfect for me. It’s got some heft and doesn’t move around. Also, in comparison to my last MBP (2008, I think), it’s a featherweight. I’ve got the iPad for the days that require ultra-light.

I switched to Yosemite about 2 months ago. Absolutely trouble-free and totally pain-free upgrade. No killer must-have features that I've found. And I think Photos is a big step backward from iPhoto -- it's aimed at the clueless selfie crowd. You can't edit EXIF info with the app, so photos taken with my Olympus OM‑D E‑M1 mirrorless camera don't have geo coordinates. Major bummer.

More overpriced crappy Apple stuff that will titillate the gays, the fanbois, and the Asians looking for prestige.

More overpriced crappy Apple stuff that will titillate the gays, the fanbois, and the Asians looking for prestige....and the people who like great computers.

Don't forget the computer geeks who like better machines.

You want overpriced crap that is based on the user's vision of prestige? Look at the watch market that sells on absolute lies. Your disgust will find better targets there. How many drivers look at their watch during the Indy 500 (Tag/Heuer), how many pilots still use the chronograph function on a wristwatch (Longines)? Their crap sells for 10X as much as a good computer that keeps better time than the jewelry watches, and does FAR more.

Yeah, that $800 in 1976 dollars would be worth $3,300 today. So it only sucks about 99.9999997% as badly for him.

I went back to the original camera software that came with my camera. Try that, if it was included with your camera.

You’re right about the selfie crowd. We should call this the selfie generation.

Mac’s keyboards are c grade. I’ve never been impressed with their design, other than the lit letters, which makes late-night work wonderful.

I want them to curve the keyboard so it is ergonomic; I have one on my desktop PC and can feel the improvement in my wrists.

I’m still using my 17” MBP from 2011 - with 8GB and a 1TB hard drive. It’s a little big and heavy, but I need the 17” screen - the 15” feels too small to me.
