Anti-religious (typically, anti-Christian) attitudes as are now spreading like wildfire through social media. Similar sentiments played out horrifically in the French Revolution, the Marxist purges in Eastern Europe and China, the Cristero War in Mexico, the killing fields of Cambodia, and the ongoing slaughter of Christians in the Middle East and Africa. Is it unreasonable to wonder if and how the virulent, anti-Christian attitudes of today will be unleashed in America?

The question hit home for me yesterday at the annual Minnesota Prayer Breakfast when Governor Dayton opened his remarks by stating:

“You know the theme of today’s prayer breakfast: unity around Jesus versus the disunity that takes place around religion has been a central issue, not only in our time, but throughout the course of history. Jesus preached love, acceptance, and forgiveness, and ever since his death too many of his followers have preached hatred, discrimination – even war – all in his name.”

How much have things changed that a sitting governor would open his remarks to a room filled with 1,000 Christians – gathered in good faith under the motto “Unity in Jesus” to pray for the governor and the state – by insulting them?

How much have things changed that the governor would then shift from simply insulting the Christians gathered to a not-so-veiled threat about the need to submit to the power of the state? If you think that’s a stretch, consider his words in full:

“Religious dogmatism is another common cause of social discord. Some people insist that their rights to their religious convictions supersede their responsibilities as citizens in a lawful society. They forget Jesus’ teaching to ‘Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and render unto God the things that are God’s.’

That is THE question. And I don’t have an answer.

Yet.

‘Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and render unto God the things that are God’s.’

And that quote has been twisted by every despot in history to imply that Christians must meekly submit to whatever government they happen to have the misfortune to land under.
It does not mean that. This was Christ outfoxing the Pharisees who were trying to trick him into open rebellion. Context has meaning.

You can tell an office holder is a despot when he stands before the electorate and says “render unto Ceasar,,,” Implying of course, that he is Ceasar.

“So I ask, if you knew you would be killed by professing Christ publicly, would you do it?”

Probably not. To my eternal shame, id be more likely to seek out and liberally gutshoot the SOBs who intended to blow out my lamp. I would view it as proof of my sinful nature that my redeemer paid the bill for.

I’m funny that way.

“ever since his death too many of his followers have”

Interesting choice of metabolic state. Not “resurrection”, not “ascension”, but this alleged believer chooses “death” as the definitive endpoint of Christ’s story.

They use every single opportunity they can find to divide people into groups and then get the groups to hate one another. How do things calm down once drumbeat begins and the crowd is whipped into a frenzy of hatred? It becomes self-sustaining.

The rioters don’t need a push to go crazy anymore - they just need a reason

Beautifully stated. Not a lot of wiggle room to parse that position out. A clean quote.

“So I ask, if you knew you would be killed by professing Christ publicly, would you do it?”

That’s kind of a pointless question to ask. Just like Peter, everyone will probably say they’d never do that, but you just don’t know what you will do until you are in that situation.

* By “never do that” I meant to deny Christ, not profess Him.

One of Ann Coulter's very best books (2012) was hardly noticed here on FR. It drew the parallels between the French Revolution and what is going on today:

I believe we’re coming to the “end times” one way or the other.

That's what Luther taught. The tares will grow among the wheat until the day of Jesus' return to sort them out.

Some of the criticisms of things done in the name of Christ are fair game. You cant argue those things didn’t happen. But ... With Christians, they go after bad behaviors decades, centuries, and even over a millennia ago.

"...So what is the truth about the Crusades? Scholars are still working some of that out. But much can already by said with certainty. For starters, the Crusades to the East were in every way defensive wars. They were a direct response to Muslim aggression — an attempt to turn back or defend against Muslim conquests of Christian lands. [Read more: The Real History of the Crusades]

Everyone not familiar with the French Revolution should knowledge up on it.

Excellent advice. Until I read about it, I thought the French revolution was similar to the American. Wrong. The French revolution was more like a vicious communist revolution. It was extremely anti-religious.
