Do not use 3rd party chargers on your mobile devices. . . many of them do not have power limiting circuitry or circuitry to stop charging when the battery is fully charged and can overcharge the device causing it to overheat.

“3rd party charger” . . . like the USB port on a computer, for example?

Nope, those are pretty limited to putting out what is specified. . . but a 110 to 5V 1amp DC charger is by no means guaranteed to put out 5V at 1amp. The computer has a switching power supply. . . and will always have 5V at 1amp DC on the logic board. . . or it will burn out itself. Often 3rd party chargers are junk transformers that just have a DC output at 5V, and not much control of the amperage or voltage. ZAAAP!

I always called them transformers, they transform one type of electricity to another and if the specs on the case or body of the replacement (Input, out put,Ma/Va,V etc) are not the same as the original something isn’t going to work out.
So many think because the device end fits its OK.
Not so

No, like a 1” cube 110V AC to 5V DC converter. Per an article somewhere that does a detailed analysis, Apple’s is a marvel of compact & safety engineering, while the cheap knockoffs are high voltage disasters waiting to happen - and in this case did.

If a company that makes millions of a product designs it in such a way that it can’t handle a charger from another manufacturer, it’s the COMPANY’S fault. It is reasonable to expect that the owner will plug in anything that fits. In a court of law, tThe fault lies with Apple.

Nope. If a "USB" charger from a cheap manufacturer does not adhere to the USB specs, then it's the charger maker's fault. But good luck suing a small Chinese company.

You don't seem to understand the consequences of the current legal situation in the US. The manufacturer with the "deepest pockets" pays, specs be damned.

So I can put out a “charger” that shoves 120V AC through the USB wire, and if it blows up the iPhone it’s Apple’s fault. I understand the legal “deep pockets” climate, I was just commenting on “classical” liability law.

Yes.

I work for an electronics manufacturer. Our users are all well trained. Yet, we design our equipment so that any pin-to-pin connection can withstand anywhere from a dead short to 250 volts AC.

BTW, there's no such thing as "classical" liability law. There's only "law". It's entirely different from "logical".
