Woman With 650 Turtles in Her Bathroom Has No Clue What to Do With Them
New York Post ^ | May 9, 2015 | Laura Italiano

Lorri Cramer’s Upper West Side bathroom is “shell” on earth.

“I have no idea what I’m going to do with them,” Cramer said Saturday as 620 red-eared slider turtle hatchlings bobbed around in five big blue basins of water.

Every one of the golf-ball-sized baby turtles is a skittering speck of contraband — members of a non-native species that’s illegal to sell or release in New York state.

What do you get when you combine a turtle and a flu shot?

A slow poke...

“Look at that ‘S’ car go!” Snails are reptiles, right?
They leave slime trails, like Jesse Jackson ....

Well, if they are native to the southeastern United States, why not just drive them down to Georgia and turn them loose?

New Yorkers are actually among the most provincial people in the U.S. It probably just wouldn’t occur to any of those involved to come up with a solution that involved leaving the city.

When my grandson and his mother moved out of my condo, I inherited George and Gracie, two land tortoises. They had babies three years ago, some of which survived to be given away at school. I feed them when I’m there and am moving them this summer to a farm. Tame little things. Knock on the door for banana bits some days. They live on insects and greenery. When the grasshoppers arrive, they have a big time.

When I was very young, we had a vacation home, rarely used...I remember the stereo was playing by a window while I was outside, and I saw this huge turtle standing on the porch right under the window, his head stretched as far up as he could get it, like a pointer. He seemed completely hypnotized by the music.
So I’ve always thought that turtles are smarter than they appear.

Surely this lady is aware of "Turtle Pond", aka Belvedere Lake, in New York City's Central Park. It's where everyone else dumps their Red-Eared Sliders.

A big snapping turtle took up residence at the pond we swam in on my grandpa's farm. We asked him if the turtle would bite. The only thing he would say was, "He hasn't yet."

I don't think we swam there much that summer.

"Lorri Cramer’s Upper West Side"

Cramer vs Kramer

He's of course also from Manhattan's Upper West Side.

in crates intentionally mislabeled as “seafood—” by Chinatown wholesalers, who sell them to nearby novelty shops or, in bulk, to well-meaning Buddhists, who set them free in karma-enhancing “compassionate release”

I've heard this is done on occasion at the above mentioned Turtle Pond in Central Park. There was a NY Slimes article on it a few years back. I've never seen it myself. They may do it very early in the morn.
