henever Republicans talk about trimming the federal food stamp program, Democrats decry them as cold, heartless or worse. But new research shows that cutting food stamps could actually make the country healthier.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture looked at data from 2007 through 2010, then compared average weights of those on food stamps — officially called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — to those who weren't.

America gives a better life to the ordinary guy than does any other country. Let’s be honest: rich people live well everywhere. America’s greatness is that it has extended the benefits of affluence, traditionally available to the very few, to a large segment in society. We live in a nation where “poor” people have TV sets and microwave ovens, where construction workers cheerfully spend $4 on a nonfat latte, where maids drive very nice cars, where plumbers take their families on vacation to the Caribbean. Recently I asked an acquaintance in Bombay why he has been trying so hard to relocate to America. He replied, “I really want to move to a country where the poor people are fat.”

Now we need Green Personal Trainers for poor fat people.

Not only they are getting fat, but they are getting stupid (ooops, low information) because of “no fat, no cholesterol” campaign to sell Lipitors.
Getting fat - getting stupid due to brain shrinkage from carbos.

It’s because of all the food deserts. Just not enough food.

What? Eating prepared, preserved, food-like products makes you fat?

If 40% are obese, why not cut the program by say... 40%... heck even cutting it by a measly 5% would be a “GOOD START”...

I will add that even seemingly educated people these days have been largely brainwashed by fads and advertising to forget almost all of the nutritional basics. We were taught in school about the “food pyramid”. It has been modified a bit since that time, but the basic principles remain the same. My wife taught nutrition for several years... oh, the stories she would come home and tell. All of these people who obsess over “carbs”, “protein”, and my personal favorite... the vilified wheat protein “gluten” almost always miss the point. “Carbs”, protein and even fats are all parts of a nutritious diet.

To simplify greatly... in your body everything is broken down to sugar for fuel, fat is used for storage, and protein is used for tissue repair. In order for protein to be used Their are also many essential vitamins and minerals that we need to stay healthy. Vilifying one food group, especially “carbs” is just plain silly... basically vegetables, fruits and grains are all “carbs”. All of these are important sources of nutrients.

[ 10 lbs potatoes, $5 (at right time of year, $2).
50 lbs rice or bread flour, <$20.
1 lb frozen mixed veggies, $1.
8 hot dogs, $1.

That’s more food than you can stand for $1.50/day. ]

I think they should have prepacked boxes of this sort of food that gets packed at the supermarket that they can pick up. Also and screw the liberal “we don’;t want food stamp user to have a stigma” argument, the stigma is what helps them eventually get OFF food stamps!

Even if they have to have mandatory classes for cooking using a governement provided crock pot and rice cooker, I would be less angry about it by virtue of them removing allt he junk food and cheap crapo food that an EBT can but these days.

Hmmm...my wife would beg to differ. And she is an expert on both cooking and quality food. She is constantly complaining about the cost of quality food.

We’ve been eating so much in carbs, that what is considered “Low Carb” is really “Normal Carb”, it’s putting things back to where they should be.

The vilification of “carbs” has reached such extreme proportions that it has become insane. In a normal healthy diet... carbohydrates should be the source of most of your calories. We know many people who intentionally eat basically only protein and fat. Despite all the Atkin’s adherents you find everywhere... my wife and I have seen the devastating effect this has on peoples’ health when adhered to for an extended period of time. Eating too much protein is bad for your kidneys especially, but also has many other negative consequences. They often loose weight, but in every case we know they have ALWAYS gained it back again within a short time after returning to a normal and sustainable diet.

Well, politically speaking, the liberals would scream that the GOP wants to take food out of the mouths of hungry children, if anyone tries to cut food stamps. Politically it would be difficult to ever cut back these programs.

I channel surfed recently, ran across Melissa Harris-Perry on MSNBC, the same girl who wears tampon earrings to make a political statement. And she was talking to a group of school age kids, who said they were hungry in school. The liberals are pushing the notion that, in spite of record numbers on food stamps and school feeding programs, that we have a big problem with hunger in this country.

It amazes me to hear this also, because we are in year 7 of the Era of Obama. Weren’t we supposed to solve all social problems in the Era of Obama, per liberals????

I’ve often wondered if the kids in the house are on free school breakfast/lunches/(sometimes) dinner, do they also get food stamps? If so, why?

Yes, most of the children who are receiving free school lunches and breakfasts, and now late afternoon dinners as well come from families which are recipients of food stamps.

In fact, schools are increasingly now serving meals to students and even non school attending family members on weekends and over the summer break when school is not in session.

The excuse given for the free meals at school is so “no child must go hungry”

Ironically, the whole concept and rational for why Food Stamps were created in the first place was so “so the children would not go hungry”.

The reality is the food stamps are now just another form of currency in the underground black market economy and schools are being used as conduits to supply free food to people to allow them use their food stamps as currency on underground black market for under the table cash, drugs smokes or booze..

I do believe many of those on assistance are 2nd/3rd generation and they are basically enslaved to this mindset. I would like to see a complete overhaul of the food stamp system, which would include drug testing and home economics classes being tied to the aid received. It should become more basic in choices.
