Why Do Women Wear Makeup?

Posted on 05/01/2015 7:21:55 AM PDT by newb2012

I have always wondered what makes a woman feel beautiful and comfortable stepping out of their homes only after wearing their makeup, most of them despite having flawless and beautiful skin and features. As silly as it sounds, I have always been intrigued by this. Guys, you can have all the fun you want with your comments but I’m really looking to see the girls’ perspective on this.

I recall this image made the rounds not long ago...

and yeah, there's probably some photoshopping going on there too.

I enjoy women who wear makeup in the same way I enjoy women who wear a nice looking dress.

Not all makeup, looks good, and not all women look good in makeup, and some women don’t need to wear makeup.

If a woman wears it because it makes her feel more attractive or whatever, I am okay with that.

But I am a fan of “tastefully” applied and worn makeup. When my wife puts it on...sometimes it is just a touch of eye-liner, or a brush to the eyebrows. Not much, but enough.

Too much is...un-atttractive on nearly any woman.

Actually I’m more curious why women have handbags and carry stuff in them. As a guy, all I carry are in my pants: wallet, phone and keys.

Since I do not intend to hi-jack the thread, I’ll answer the OP now.

In my younger days I never left the house without being fully made up. I just assumed it was part of being well turned out.

As I entered my mid 50’s, I scaled back to tinted lotion, a bit of lipstick and a touch of mascara - none of those sink into the wrinkles. LOL!

I agree with you 100%.

Some guys say stuff like that...sometimes I think it is for some kind of effect.

A man looks good shaved with a good haircut and clean clothes.

A woman looks good with a little makeup on, and nice clothes, when appropriate, a dress on her is very nice.

I don’t care if women dress for other women, or whatever. That is their business...but I like it!

Those Maine women don’t believe in hair color or styling either. This woman does not feel any wrath toward them; I just think it is a shame that they don’t try to make themselves look better.

You don’t need your flame suit but she has got at the very least mascara, blush, and lip color on.

And another thing...when my wife puts on makeup and/or a touch of perfume, and it is just her and me...I love it.

It means to me that she cares how she looks to me, and that means something.

And there are times I shave just for her...:)

Well said.

I think, also, that some women do not vary their make-up choices as they age. As a fair-skinned Boomer woman, I have learned to shy away from the black mascara of my youth in favor of the brown, which, BTW, is not very easy to find where I live.

You lost me there. Is the young man in the photo some actor wearing make-up? Is that why he has colors on his skin?

I think the guys enjoy an opportunity to get into “oh,those silly little women” mode, LOL. And I say that as a woman who likes men. We females tolerate that sometimes.

In my experience, feminists will tell you that women dress for other women because they want to dismiss male influence. Well, there is competition among women, no doubt. But normal women DO care whether men like their appearance.

Genetic because they find tribes with no other contacts and the women are all dolled up by local standards.
Same for shopping and predisposition to are socialism?

Well Catherine, you nailed it. The real question is: why do men nag women about make up; but women do not nag men for scraping razor sharp metal across their face everday? Guess its all part of being civilized or something.

Yes, I’m not saying that it is invisible, it just doesn’t attract your attention. Woman should have warm cheeks, not red balls of blush.
