The fighters who've lost to Floyd Mayweather explain why he's so impossible to beat
Business Insider ^ | 04/30/2015 | Tony Manfred

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is widely regarded as the best fighter of his generation and one of the best defensive fighters of all time.

He enters his May 2 fight with Manny Pacquiao with an undefeated record of 48-0. There's a case to be made that Pacquiao, who has knocked out more opponents, can pull an upset, but most expect Floyd to win this fight the same way he has won fights for years — making his opponent miss early, timing his counters to perfection, and eventually winning on points.

There's a radical juxtaposition between Mayweather's persona out of the ring (obnoxious, offensive, appalling) and his style within it (calm, intelligent, pragmatic). Over the years the fighters who've lost to Mayweather have spoken about his boxing brilliance in glowing terms, and explained what makes him so hard to beat.

Ricky Hatton (lost by knockout, December 8, 2007):

"I was fighting a genius, a boxing artist. I was getting more and more frustrated. Lose your cool against Floyd Mayweather and what you do is you get knocked out." — to Showtime

Oscar De La Hoya (lost by split decision, May 5, 2007):

"Now we have to give credit to Mayweather because what Mayweather can do is what Mayweather Sr. calls 'walking your opponent down.' So what he does is he gets in the pocket and covers himself and he'll walk you down. And he'll let you throw punches and Pacquiao is probably going to keep throwing punches in bunches and he might tire himself out while Mayweather is just blocking everything. And then Mayweather can just come, throw his combinations of two or three punches, win the round, put the rounds in the bag, and win the fight." — to HBO

This will be a fun fight.

Yes it should. I used to be a big boxing fan back in the days when the Friday Night Fights sponsored by Gillete was on. But they are charging $90 to watch and that will not attract new fans.

Anderson the Spider Silva vs Floyd Mayweather

I’d pay $200 to watch that fight.

A boxer’s punches (I used to box) or ferocious. We had karate guys come to the gymn and they were tough but without legs they were no match.
And in two great street fights I saw, the brawler in one case took like fifty kicks from a great MA but just kept coming and won the right.
The other one, well respected black belt, got whacked. He won a lot of fights too though to be fair.

MMA is NOT boxing. It is street fighting. Boxing is an art of self defense.

The smartest thing I ever heard Mike Tyson say:
“Everyone has a plan, until you get punched in the face”

I did lol. I was gonna bob and weave. Listen to the Rocky theme song :) Throw so many punches he couldn’t get one off. Then ten seconds into first round with a guy named Damon, gave over. lol. I lasted three though.
Knew a guy Seamus McDonough, who fought Holyfield. He lived on Staten Island. I saw him at diner after the fight. Couldn’t recognize him. He said it was like getting hit with a baseball bat by a strong guy. Toughest Irish kid I ever knew.

lol. You know, I was thinking before, it’s embarrassing to say you boxed now :)
On a scale of ten, I was a six. But the Puerto rican trainer there used to tell me I was one of the best white fighters lol.
Got in to spar with some prior champs but don’t remember their names. It was one million (well, 25) years ago. The gym was 10 bucks a month.

I’ve become a big fan of the UFC and I like how they will have, for free, all the undercards which are pretty good fights and then charge for the main. I also believe NBC, i think, bringing back fight nights will be good.

Not having been in a fight since I was 17 I will defer to your expertise.

Frankly, I haven't watched boxing since they put Hardbody Harrison away.

Mayweather will win easily. He is just too good a boxer with superior technical skills compared to Manny. Floyd’s only real opponent is age, but that is not a problem on Saturday. Manny is about the same age.

"I see the Filipino knocking him out. I could be very wrong, of course."

I don't see Manny knocking Mayweather out. Manny hasn't knocked anyone out since he's been off the PEDs. And if you say he wasn't using any and just shrunk naturally over the last few years, our conversation is over. Manny may still win because I think Mayweather relies too much on his defense and the opportunities to land precision shots. I think Mayweather clearly lost his first fight to Marcos Maidana because Maidana crowded him and never stopped punching. Manny is capable of doing that even more than Maidana did, and he has a better defense that Maidana does.

“I used to box.”

When I was growing up in Brooklyn, the gym by my house featured boxing along with the typical gym stuff. If you wanted to use the gym, you had to get in the ring, once.

Got in the ring, don’t know what hit me but I had to crawl across the ring to pick up my mouthguard, nose and a couple of teeth that were in the mouthguard. And I was wearing headgear.

That’s why I took to boxing. I was getting beat up by all the crazy Italians out here lol. And I am one! Paid off in timely fashion against some steroid punk in a club called the Caves when I was 18. He was supposed to be brutal but I fought him to draw until his fiend cracked bottle over my head. What a night that was.

It will be fun to see. Pac has power, but his quickness will surprise Floyd.

Heavyweight? I have always been interested in the boxing game; it is one of the few sports where, like chess, there is not an inherent advantage built in for one side or the other.
I got to meet Ron Lyle once; he came to my school (early 1971, as I recall); he was talking about how he was going to clean Cassius Clay’s clock!
