System Crash for Starbucks Leads to Free Coffee for Some

The in-store payment systems at Starbucks went down Friday at 8,000 company-operated stores in the United States and Canada, leading to an unexpected giveaway of coffee drinks at some stores.

In a statement, the company said the failure was caused not by hackers but by a problem during a daily computer system update. The chain said late Friday that it was still working to resolve the problem, which also affected the chain’s Fresh and Teavana stores.

“We are actively working to resolve the outage, and our stores will remain open and continue to serve our customers,” the company said.

News of the outage spread quickly on social media, with the hashtag #TheFrappening.

It's always nice to have a quick automatic backout procedure just in case a mid-day update fails in the US. Because otherwise you have to give Kumar a wakeup call in Bangalore to get it fixed. #ITFrappens

Finally, a catastrophe unlikely to impact poor minorities most.

Bit it still might be caused by "climate change."

I'd pay $10 for a fresh cup of Dunkin' Donuts coffee over a free gallon of Starsucks any day of the week......

You operations at 8000 stores can not run independently of the central system???..dumb

Then you do an update to this single point of failure system during your production day instead of off production hours in a maintenance window?...really dumb

... Whoever in charge of Starbucks IT needs to get canned.. super stupid.. I did global it networks for years... we had a maintenance window.. 1 am to 5 am sun morning in the time zone you might impact if something went wrong during maintenance

Meditate on the extrapolation of the nominal premise for a glimpse of the future.

What did I just say?

Ultimately it always depends on a single system somewhere.

Coffee that tastes like burned ookum-dookum should be free anyway. Or is it because you’re supposed to cover that used motor oil they call coffee with all those expensive la-de-da extras that it tastes so lousy straight up?

Dunkin’ Donuts sells coffee that’s meant to be drunk black & barefoot. That’s the test of a good cup of joe.

No it doesn't..good design would allow each store to function independently. in fact they should be able to function with no automates system at all ...

No reason a glorified coffee shop can't continue to make coffee drinks and money just because there no computer link to corporate.. or even a computer at all....it not like coffee shops don't pre date the computer age

corporate nodes are not coffee shops. they're corporate nodes. corporate nodes are completely dependent on the home office. IT exists for one reason: consolidation of command-and-control. this is the antithesis of the "coffee shop".

sounds like you should know this.

Yes i do know this.. the point is if the overall SYSTEM design is done right (not IT system but the business operation) it should be capable of functioning independently...and even manually with pencil and paper.. you have to have this redundancy built in to function as a business... if the overall operation was designed properly it should be able to function even manually

give me a good reason why the individual operations need to be tied to corporate to the point it cannot function without corporate that's idiotic....

Starbucks cards?...you can't continue to operate unless you have access to Starbucks cards?..that stupid...

credit cards?..One credit card systems don't have to be going to go through the central office and to you can still design a system that can function without credit cards.

IT is automation of what should be the manual process it should be aid anytime you design an IT system that you can no longer function or operate without it you have a bad design.

Business can continue in a degraded function if the IT system is down .....

Business should not come to a complete stop..and lose sales and money... because that the point of a business to service the customer in to continue to make money whether their automated or not automated

A business that cannot function at least degraded manner when the IT system is down is as stupid as a person that can not add of make change with out a calculator or cash register.

And that come from 35 years of it system service.. In business nothing should stop production even a down IT system..that's called building in redundancy

if the overall SYSTEM design is done right

It's been said that 'they don't make things like they used to'.

I think one of the most foreboding circumstances in all of human history is the development of technology coinciding with the precipitous decline in competence and morals.

But that is the entire point: man outwits himself.

For me it just come naturally from what I do

What I do for a living is repair broken or down computer systems and networks

So obviously I must always be able to function do my job when I have no working computer system or network.

This reminds me of every stupid situation many years ago as a field service engineer for a computer system company

I was in the main corporate headquarters when the main corporate computer system went down so i and another engineer went to service / repair it.

we found we had a defective logic board in the main frame and needed a part

no problem we’re located in corporate the main parts warehouse is right downstairs

we go downstairs to the main parts warehouse order desk to get the part and here’s where it gets super stupid

Us to manager of parts warehouse “We need this logic board”

Parts Warehouse Manager to us “ I can’t give you that board the computer systems down”

Us to warehouse parts manager “we know were repairing the system that’s why we need the logic board”

warehouse parts manager to us “well I still can’t give you the logic board until the systems up”

Us to manager “are you stupid we need the parts to repair the system!”

manage to us “don’t take that tone with me I’m not giving you the part until the system comes back up! so I’m not giving you the part until you fix the system!”

we went round and round for at least 10 minutes with this clueless woman Parts Warehouse Manager until one of the guys that just pack boxes standing behind her watching this BS..looked at us and gave us the eye to the back door...meaning if we ran around to the back door he toss the part out to us

so while I distracted this idiot woman at the front desk my partner ran around to the back door and the other guy quickly open the door and tossed out the part to him

we then went upstairs and fixed the system.

the kicker was when we came downstairs with the defective part after getting the system back up to turn it back into the warehouse for repair
.
the same idiot manager look at us triumphantly saying “see now the system is up now I can give you the part”
