Motorcycle Camera Mount question (vanity)
Self ^ | 04/23/15 | Zeugma

Hi y'all,

I figured I'd post this here, because of the wealth of freeper knowledge out there. I figure someone will have some input.

I bought a used Gold Wing some time ago. It came with the two mounts shown below (the chapstick is for scale). I've done some searching, for the kind of mount you'd attach to these so you could attach a camera, but I must be using the wrong terminology or something, as I've been unable to really find anything that is appropriate.

Does anyone out there have any recommendations. I have a small video camera, and a small point/shoot that I'd like to set up on these for long rides.

GoPro has plenty of stuff for their cameras, so they might have some universal ones too. Also check out the pashnit.com website, he does a lot of bike videos and has a wide range of reviews and parts links.

I have a go pro and found it to shake too much when fixed to either cycle’s handlebars. A flh electraglide Harley or a 230 Honda Off road bike.
Instead I have a mount on top of the helmet as it doesn’t shake.,

I have used RAM mounts for every thing from GPS receivers to pistol holster on my bikes, dirt bikes to sport touring bikes to touring bikes to ATVs. My guess is they would work out fine and dandy for a camera on a Wing.

I was just going to say that you’d probably have to do a helmet mount.

It’s gonna need shock mounts if the camera is to survive. Most cameras will not take the pounding.

All the cameras I've seen on motorcycles have been on the rider's helmet.

I no longer ride, so 'yer on yer own'.

I think that is some kind of magnetic mount, but I don’t remember what it’s called.

He has mounts, but they vibrate too much to be useful. He wants one that doesn’t vibrate when attached to the bike. I’m not sure that is possible.

Yup, that looks like a RAM ball mount style.

However, it might be a knockoff. Check the ball diameter.

As others have stated, due to vibrations, be it on an ultralight, motorcycle, or any small motorized form of transport that vibrates and shakes a lot, a helmet cam is the best way to go.

I’ll just pray that you don’t video your death for your next of kin to have to watch.
Is that OK?

If it’s got a 1” ball, it’s a RAM ball mount, or at least RAM type gear can use it.

If the ball is 17mm (as seems likely from the pictures) it’s a Garmin mount. Here’s a vendor that uses those for Garmin GPS, cell phones, etc., who looks to have been the supplier for those:

Personally, I’d either use those for Garmin/cell phone use and just use another system to mount my GoPro or I’d jettison them and use one of the many RAM mounts on the market instead.

It can be done. This is a GoPro clamped to the engine guard of my 1986 Honda Nighthawk 700S:

Handlebar mounts can work as well but I’ve found they don’t usually work out for me. A helmet cam is a better choice than a handlebar mount in my experience.

Here’s some videos from my helmet cameras over the last few years. Top mount GoPro, which does make you look like a Teletubby:

I mounted a gopro camera on my shotgun for shooting clays, talk about a pounding! The camera handled it ok but it shook out of position every time I fired and I had to reset it. Overall the experiment failed but it was fun to try anyway.
