For U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Julian McDonald, Layka, the 4-year-old Belgian Malinois with a missing paw, isn’t just a canine companion. She’s a hero.

McDonald, 29, said Layka saved his life on an overseas deployment in Afghanistan in 2012.

Beautiful story. But ill just say it, its pretty screwed up to send dogs into a human war.

That heroic dog is missing a lot more than just ‘a paw’. If I’m seeing the form correctly, she is missing both right legs, fore and aft. Unless he is able to get a prosthesis for her to enable walking, I wonder about her quality of life in this condition. Is he really doing her a favor?
I know the owner’s love is there. I used to have dogs and cats. The hardest thing to do was to give them up from time to time, or learn to do without them after a natural death.

My cat would take the side of someone beating me if there were kibbles involved.
awesome dog!!! I would give to gofundme for prosthetics.

I think it has both back legs - the left paw is sticking out underneath the blanket.

We had to amputate our dog’s leg. He was 9 or 10 years old I think, but acted really young. At first I thought we did the wrong thing as it took him awhile to recover, and he didn’t seem too happy about it.

But, he recovered and got the hang of it. The next winter he was with the family playing on the local sledding hill running around like crazy. Some lady asked how old our “puppy” was.

“Um - he’s 10 years old”
“Oh - he sure doesn’t act like it!”
About three minutes later after watching him chase around:
“Oh my - he’s only got three legs!!”

Cats, you know...ah well cats are not dogs, but I love them too, sort of.

Dogs are the my favorite in this world. I thank God for sharing them with us.

Maybe the Marine is doing the right thing then. Some animals can adjust very quickly. You were very kind to your dog. He had a few more good years left after all.

Check the picture again; shes got both right legs, right rear is just shaved and shot up pretty bad.
Right front is mostly gone but she wouldn’t be the first dog to be called tripod.

Layka, baby girl, you will be blessed during our day and night prayers tomorrow. You’re a good, good girl!

Oh yes, now I see both right legs. No one will ever know how much I wept when I had to put Buddy, my elderly Black Cat to sleep at the Humane Society. I had later to sit in the car in their parking lot for maybe close to an hour before I could compose myself enough to drive normally.

There was a 3 legged Dobe named Tripod in Norfolk VA, when I lived there.

You did *not* want to find yourself in his yard.

A missing leg did not slow him down or adjust his attitude.

:)

“He had a few more good years left after all.”

I was debating on whether to spend the money or not. And the doc said she wouldn’t even suggest the surgery if she didn’t think he would bounce back - the dog was so young at heart. “AND - even if it is just another year - that’s like 7 years in dog years!” That made the decision an instant “yes”.

He’s got 3 good legs and is romping around like a pup. Fallen into a tub of butter, he has! => https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1NkQhzZXDE
