Apple Watch: An Overnight Multi-Billion Dollar Business
Carl Howe blog ^ | Posted on April 16, 2015 | By Carl Howe

It was just three years in the making

Quick look

Here’s the quick summary for those of you who don’t have time to read the next 3,000 words.

The Apple Watch went on sale for pre-orders on April 10, 2015, and the Apple Store tells us that delivery dates for all orders now stretch into summer and beyond. We know that the initial production run of Apple Watch has sold out; what we don’t know is how many Apple Watches that represents. I’ve built a simple model that predicts that the initial run of watches was more than 3 million units and will yield Apple Watch revenues of over $2 billion for the first two weeks of sales. While this figure is smaller than first weekend sales of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, it dwarfs all other smartwatch sales to date and represents a milestone in wearable sales. The model suggests that while Sport Watch will lead sales in volume, selling 1.8 million units through May 8, Apple Watch will actually lead in revenue during that period, garnering about $900 million versus Sport’s $675 million. I also believe that Apple’s decision to introduce the Edition will be validated by $500 million in sales on only 40,000 units.

I was very interested in tablets/ipad until I found you needed a smartphone and data connection/subscription to do most things with them.

Not true. An iPad and in fact most tablets, are fully functional with a WIFI connection. They never require a smartphone to function. An iPad can be had with a cellular connection which allows it the freedom to connect to the Internet without a WIFI connection. . . and there were some Android tablets that also had cellular connectivity as well for the same purpose.

My personal iPad has the LTE cellular connectivity because I often use it away from a WIFI connection. Because I have a smartphone, service for it costs me an additional $10 per month on my plan.

Care to guess who wore it ?

Dick Tracy. . . but it was only a wrist two-way radio and later a two-way TV. As I recall, it did not have any other capacities. I would give the smartwatch invention to the comic book authors of Batman. . .

If Gould were around today, it would be the “2-way wrist Kindle.”

It was not designed to give you the time. But the, given your proclivities, maybe it was to give only you the time.

I’m sure the fanboys will be all over it, they’re fad driven and will hop on anything deemed ‘worthy’ by those in the media paid to say as much.

Wrist watches are fad driven?

If you're taking flak it means you're over the target.

I'm not at all willing to bet on the italicized part... ;-)

“If you’re taking flak it means you’re over the target. “

You’re not “taking flak” you’re getting called out over unoriginal, annoying, and just-plain-wrong trolling.

These threads remind me of the first threads about the iPad... “It’s named after a feminine product!” “It’s going to bomb!1!!!” Yeah, how did that work out again?

I doubt I’ll be an Apple Watch early adopter, but I’ll probably get one at some point for the fitness aspects.

I wouldn’t bet money on it either. I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt and just assuming they aren’t TOTALLY ignorant and aren’t cursed by low IQs...but I could be wrong in those assumptions. But their irrational hatred is definitely VERY bizarre and displays some sort of personality defect IMHO.

How many iPhones are in use?

Over 1.3 Billion iOS devices have been sold since the first iPhones were sold on June 29, 2007. over 450,000,000 of those in the last four years alone were iPhones capable of connecting to the Apple Watch. Apple claims that 700-800 million iPhones are still active around the world. The balance of the iOS devices are iPads and iPods (not all iPods, especially the early models, ran on iOS).

Exactly what fads are those? From all perspectives I've seen, it is the Android users who follow fads in phones. You don't see Apple users jumping from phone maker to phone maker to catch the next faddish gimmick in phone design. Nor does Apple jump quickly on Fad spec list additions to their phones or tablets such as 3D or 4K screens, useless phone sensors such as Samsung's SpO2 blood oximeter and atmospheric hydrometers. Exactly what "fads" do Apple users, who generally keep their computers far longer than Windows computer users do, follow?

The evidence is that Apple users while fans of Apple products are not at all driven by "fads". . . and do not jump ship to other products merely to follow the popular trend. If that were so, they wouldn't be Apple users.

I will still be surprised if I cannot buy one of these for $25 on eBay or Craigslist in mid July.

I agree, when the display reaches 700 inches and the weight declines to 0.005 pounds and the battery life is extended to 5 years, Apple may have an iffy product. Until then, let the suckers beware !

No Apple watch for me. My ultimate watch to own is real watch, a Omega Sea master Chronograph. Probably one the finest watches made and will Dawn sure outlast a Apple watch, plus not lose it’s value.
