Dog Flu Outbreak Gained Foothold at Urban Doggie Day Cares
ABC News ^ | Apr 17, 2015 | CARLA K. JOHNSON

Many urbanites use doggie day cares while they work long hours. Paying others to exercise their pets, owners can forgo long walks and enjoy guilt-free pooch snuggling in the evenings. While usually a healthy experience for the dogs, the day care environment, with dozens of pets mingling, contributed to an epidemic of dog flu in Chicago that is spreading in the Midwest, experts say.

our dogs don’t interact with other dogs, even when they have to go to the Vet he makes sure that dogs don’t touch the noses of other dogs. You just never know what they have, even when they appear healthy. This doggy flu is really scary stuff, heard many have died..keep our four legged friends safe!!

Without reading, I am getting on my soapbox.

I do not know why people need to put dogs in day care. It is a waste of money and time around going to work.

Once again, I sense people going hyper about animals and making them something they are not. It is really about what the HUMAN “needs” (i.e., wants) rather than the dog.

Train the dog to handle a normal whole day at work. They can do it. None of this stuff existed before some 15 years ago. You can bet not every dog owner had people at home for at least half the day at a dog’s beck & call.

It’s hard to have a puppy when working but it doesn’t last long. Most dogs are pretty durable and can handle a whole day. They are only neurotic if their owner projects it on them. Older dogs may need help, but most mature dogs should have no problem with a good 9 hour day.

I never had trouble with my Shepherds once they were conditioned and trained.

So, none of this spreading disease, or getting attacked by others, for them.

Lyme disease in dogs is not like Lyme in humans.
Most dogs [90%] who have been exposed to the virus never really get sick.
However, the vaccine can cause a fatal form of the virus that *cannot* be easily treated with Doxycycline, like “real” Lyme can.

http://foreverhomegreyhounds.com/resources/the_lyme_vaccine.shtml

Just get a SNAP 4 test every six months and *if* you get a positive hit, have a Quant C6 titer test done.

Then, *if* the titers show actual, -active- Lyme, a couple months of cheap Doxy will knock it out.

The Lyme vax is more deadly than the “disease”.

It was -banned- for human use but hey, we gotta make up the money spent for all that research.

They get used to a routine.

If it’s 7a or 5p.....our Lab lays on the floor by the pantry, where we keep his kibble. You can set your clock by him ....with outstretched front legs....*pointing* to the pantry door. *Time to eat mom.* *Now.*

Same for the late afternoon, when he listens for my son to arrive home from work....you can hear that diesel truck from a mile away, and right at the front window, paws on the sill....tail a mile a minute.

Maybe they should stop importing meat dogs from South Korea.

I have a great Playday place four blocks from work. The Twins go once a week and we also board them there when we go out of town (infrequently) we are watching this with the crew there and will take every precaution to make sure everyone stays healthy.

I asked my vet about getting the vaccine for my dog. He will be having to stay at a kennel for 2 days in June. Also, we go to the Lake to walk and meet other dogs. She said she would not recommend the vaccine for Gizmo because he is a healthy dog. If he had immune issues, she would. She is not vaccinating her own dogs and her assistants are not either. The vaccine is two shots at $42 each. I was glad not to put ,y doggy thru something he doesn’t need.

We get our dog the shot for kennel cough. It is too easy to catch.

The vaccine is two shots at $42 each

The vaccine is about 6 bucks.

The office call is 10-14 bucks

The biohazard fee is 5-7 bucks

The injection fee per shot is 15-20 bucks.

For convenience, and a good chance the vaccine was well stored and handled, the vet is ok.

if cost is a concern, can usually get any vaccine except rabies from other sources.

She does not recommend giving them to a dog unless necessary. I guess there can be some side effects and it may not, just as the human ones, be the right one anyway. If she says I do not need to have it given to him, I am not. The cost is not an issue, at all. Not when it comes to my furbaby.

As it should be.

I just replied because you did mention it in your previous.

Thanks. The vet mentioned it because it is, in her view, an unnecessary expense.
